Two shots, two kills...
I got a late start huntingoutside of Front Royal Friday morning (didn't get into position untilalmost 6:30), but sure enough, right as the sun began to rise I saw a fawn at the edge of the field I was hunting, about 130 yards away. Then I saw a few does scampering around, and what I thought was a doe stepped out from behind a tree for a clear shot. I discovered later that it was a button buck.
By the time I cycled the bolt on my 700 ADL, it was out of sight. Isaw it run, but wasn't sure if it had gone down. I was surprisingly still while aiming, though, so I was confident.
Then another does runs out from behind a treeafew seconds laterand stops between two tree about 25 yards in from of me (I mean the trees...the doe was about 130 yards out). I shot again, and thought I had hit around the liver area, but I saw it flounder on the ground for a few moments before getting up and running off into the tree line.
Had some breakfast, came back out to take a look, and saw about a half dozen buzzards circling that back corner of the field. My cousin commented that it was about a good a sign as you can get. I walk up to the first spot and saw the deer lying 5 yards away on the edge of the brush line. Realized it was a button buck and was a little disappointed it wasn't a doe, but I figured I made a clean kill and will enjoy the meat.
Then I walked over to the second spot and saw the grass matted with blood everywhere. I found the doe about 10 yards away in some briars, the shot going in behind the left shoulder and out in front of the right. Massive, gurgling exit wound (Core-Lokts).
They both dressed out around 55-60 lbs., so nothing special, and I'm glad I took both so I could fill up the freezer more quickly. The place is crawling with deer year round and collisions are a problem, so the property owner welcomed me to whatever I couldtake. All in all, a nice morning in the fields and among the trees.
