Default scrape question??

Hello my name is Danny, I a currently hunting a 16 acre tract mostly timber and river bottom in central texas. I have located some fresh scrapes and trails along atimber line not too far from the road. There is a house maybe 100 yards from the trails. I hunted there sunday and it was so noisy kids playing and yelling, almost as if I was hunting near a playground! My question is do you think this buck was passing through or does this not bother deer at all. Please share your opinion with me. Thankyou DLB

I would think that he does frequent the area and is just used to the noise. I have a place that we hunt and it is near a campground and major highway and we see deer there all the time including nice bucks. I think they get used to things that they here on a regular basis.

I would say the buck is mostly using there during the night when the kids are inside. But they do get used to the noise after a while... I'd hunt it for a while anyway.

A deer I took last year was well with in the sounds of barking dogs, kids screaming and four wheelers reving.

Thou the sounds didn't last all day this didn't stop deer movement, they are used to it.

KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON!

I would say he is using it at night, as well. We locate lots of scrapes along raod allowance, near farms, etc but they are usually made from bed to food or vice versa and largely under darkness. You are best to try and locate the deers bedding areas and food sources. Then try and position yourself in the transition areas between these two areas. More than likely you'll find more scrapes and rublines that he will be using during daylight hours. As rut approaches he will range more freely during daylight locating hot does, the tricks is be in these areas.

Now if this area is in fact right near bedding areas and on the way to food, I would try and get to the area closest to the bed without spooking the deer. If possible find his rubline and hunt that area, it more than likely is on a natural travel route and he'll be around.

Good Luck!!

well just got in from hunting this afternoon, saw nothing..but did observe something very strange. Right in the middle of this thicket something had rooted all over the place, wild hog maybe? probably a 6 ft area. My neighbor saw a big hog sunday morning on his place. I have been hunting on the ground since season started, think I am going to find me a big tall tree (kind of sceery!) dont know anything about hog huntin. is it rare to seen wild hogs where a river runs through? thanks DLB

Dano-
Not uncommon at all to have hogs along rivers. WE have them all over the place along the rivers and creeks and they will destroy an area by rooting. I have seen places that look like a bomb went off. But we are overrun with the darn things. They are considered by many to be nuicanse.

Kill every hog you see. They will destroy your deer habitat quicker than pesticides. Good eat'n too if you know how to prepare 'em.

My mother lives in town always alot of activity going on. She has deer come into her back yard every afternoon. I've even walked to within about 10 yards of them before they will leave. Deer are animals of habit if they're used to alot of noise and people being close by it won't bother them.
