i don't really care what you "think" is right when it comes to shooting a dog while chasing wildlife because it "interferes" with your hunting... the law is very clear... as much as it'd tick me off i would not be killing the animals... i'd be lodging a complaint with the DNR with a description of the persuing animals and possible owners, etc... you DO NOT want to get caught if you do in a "pet" that is not causing harm to a person or livestock.... plain fact... not opinion...

You are absolutly correct sir it is not legal to shoot or kill a dog,you are right ,,thats where you got to read more slowly and pay att,in post 47 it reads you do not need to get caught or let granny see you, out of sight out of mind. PS just yesterday i had a beagle hound come in on me running something pretty hard so i got ready with the smokepole even though it was a little beagle all i had was that big 50 cal,and when he come out he was on a big swamp rabbit and i let him go, then told the guy who i rabbit hunt with that leroy must of got loose and hes down here running rabbits when he come out of the bottom he got penned back up. but if he would of been on a deer it be a different ending ,so im not that mean ol guy now am i.Point is here we have a low tollerance for trouble making dogs period. And we handle are on problems,no need in worrying anyone else with these minor things.

Where i live, there aren't any neighbores close by, so if i see a dog chasing a deer, it is going to be shot. We've seen a couple of dogs in the past few years and both of them were shot dead on the spot. Both of the dogs had been seen around for a couple of weeks before hand periodically in the woods around us too.

ORIGINAL: brushbustin

I just got back from the morning hunt and i saw six does but none gave me a decent shot so i passed on all of them and at about 9:30 or so i decided that i would move to my stand down in the creek bottom so i spot stalked my way down to my stand and i got up in it and no more than an hour went by and i heard something crashing though the brush.so i got ready and it was 2 does and a spike. i was going to take the spike then i heard some thing else coming so i held off thinking it might be a bigger buck, but boy was i surprised it was a pack of dogs (5 of them).and before i could shoot the spike they chased it away.Im not gonna tell you guys what idid until you tell me what you would have done in a situation like this.by the way this was private land with no house or tenats on the property.thanks
Sounds to me like you would have never seen those deer if the dogs didn't bring them to you. You failed to take advantage of the situation my friend, you could have had venison but ended up with dog meat. yep, your a real smart fella. And I beleive you said you had beagles?

If it were shotgun season and I was on my own land I would have tried to plug three of them , that's all my shotgun holds and I'll plug any pet that's chasing game . I'm not fencing off my property because some people are too stupid to restrain their pets , control your pets and you won't have to worry about me killing them . My county and state both have leash laws requiring pet owners to restrain their animals , mine is in a pen or on a leash at all times , yours should be too .

RE: bad dog(s)!!

Lets say a pack of wolves or coyotes start running the deer off your land while you are hunding. Would you shoot the coyotes or wolves
I am not partial on way or another. Your land, you have the right to do what you want I guess. I don't think you can compare coyotes and wolves to dogsthough. I know in Indiana we have a season forcoyotes (wedon't have hardley any wolves), so shooting a coyote that might be chasing a deer is a lot different than shooting someones dog. I am not saying your wrong if you do, I agree with a lot of peoples post about thetime, money and effort put forth towards deer hunting. I also would HOPE that a person would first find out who's dog it might be and tell themwhat is going onand tryto solve the problem that way.

I have hunted with guys that have shot dogs during a hunt, mainly because the dogs spotted them and werebarking and growling at them. I also have had the neighbors dog shot on the land I hunt (not by me, some tresspasser) and it caused a pretty big stirr. CO was out on the land about three times a week trying to catch theguy who did it. Didn't help that thedog belonged to theCheif of Police. You never know who's dog you might beshooting andyou better make sure it's onthe land you own. If you do know who's dog your shooting, maybe you should tell that person what the dog is doing and next time you won't pass up the chance to solve the problem yourself.

I helped a guy who just moved on to new land and the first day we walked the property we saw 5 dogs, running in a pack. They were mutts and not a one had a collar on. They were really rough looking and with his kids moving in in a week, we thought that we would check around and see if anyone else was having problems with these dogs. His neighbor said that these dogs have been roaming the area for months and causing trouble with pets and chickens. We went back with dog food and put piles around and killed all 5 dogs. I think if a dog runs by you in the woods you do not touch it, but if you talk to folks and they tell you that they think the dogs are "wild" and you look into it and then take them out I do not have a problem with that.

ORIGINAL: bristowboy_20 Here in Indiana, if you get caught being cruel to animals, you get prison time and a HUGE fine.

now if it were my dog/s being shot.......there would be some trouble. Ive had dogs come up missing numerous times. My grandma saw a guy shooting at MY dogs and it wasnt his property. He got lucky that I didnt find out who he was. But the sad part about it... none of my dogs came home that day :(there was NO hunting seasons in, and he had no right to be using my dogs for target practice.
You almost seem proud that your dogs were running at large. Doesn't IN have any sort or leash or restraint laws for dogs. Even after numerous dogs not coming home it is apparent you haven't learned a thing.

So if anyone shoots stray mutts it is a bad thing (because that isn't what you want or like). But it's perfectly fine for you to turn your nose up at the leash laws and have your dogs run loose because that is what you want or like. That is what is called a hypocrit.

Oh well - more coyote food.

(Now here comes the part where the dogs either "broke free of their leash", "dug their way out under the fence", "broke the fence", "jumped the fence", "slipped out the door" or other BS "excuse".)

GLAD TO KNOW UR A NICE GUY...... there arent any leash laws out here in the country. only in towns and cities.
Must not be any common sense laws either.

Let's just file this one under the "SSS" file. Same place as usual.

Enough about the damn dog scenario...obey your local laws and be an ethical hunter. I would exhaust all efforts then take them out as last resort.
