One rifle that hasn't been mentioned above that I have & love is a 30-40 Krag. Every deer I've ever shot at has went down with this gun, nothing beats the combination of power & accuracy. Also this gun is really clever to load & unload. The originals are very long in length, but mine has been cut down & isn't cumbersome.

The extra wieght helps keep down the recoil somewhat

30 06 is definately my gun of choice. I've hunted with others and they were fine as well, but I feel the 06 is the best overall gun for big game hunting in North America. It is also very easy to find ammunition when in a pinch.
