That might work if a pack of wolves attacked you at the same time Champlain, you could take out multiple hostiles with one shot...kind of like the spread gun in SuperContra.

Well let me add my 2 cent's worth.
I would say the best thing to do is to be quiet & still as possible but if they wind or see you then stand up wave your arm's & yell to scare them off If that doesn't work be ready to throw something or shoot it with everything you got.
If that doesn't work you might be in for a world of hurt.

Try to calm the animal down...Talk to it nicely and with humor...offer it some of your food and just smile all the time at it.....I haven't tried this yet, but I did stay at the holiday inn last night....

Odds are overwhelming that you won't "run into them" at all. You might hunt hard for 20 years and never see a cougar. Wolves are more visible but still a rare sighting. You'd do much better to worry about things like:

What should I do if I fall and break my leg?

How do I keep a tick from biting me?

How do I keep another hunter from shooting me?

Those are just three things, but I guarantee your odds of dying from any one of those three is roughly 1000 times greater than getting whacked by a cougar or wolf.
