RE: Fatal hunting accident
NY, In ohio this is not a "grey area" at all. It is perfectly legal to hunt yotes at night.
So, are you nowsuggestingthat daytime hunting is so much more widespread and dangerous (from a gross numbers perspective) that it should be banned for safety reasons
In an earlier post I clearly indicated the need to consider both gross numbers and percentages when considering accidents in daytime vs. night.
but I did feel compelled to lay out some actualfacts and offer an informed opinion.

Doesn't a coyotes eyes glow when a light is shined on it? I know a human doesn't do that. I think if I was going to try hunting at night I would try to make sure I knew of multiple ways to be able to tell the difference between game and not game. Poor guy he was so young. It sucks that you have to be worried everytime you go out if your even gonna make it back. Its like a war zone during deer season in northern missouri. So much that it is really not even worth going out. Even during bow season you gotta watch out. Andabout the guy that put an elk cape on I am sorry but that guy was just plain dumb. I hope nobody ever tries that one. I don't even take decoys with me during deer season just for that reason. I also don't like taking turkey decoys with me during the spring.

I really enjoy varmit calling at night. I don't shoot when I cant tell what it is. Just because you see eyes doesnt mean it is an animal legal to take at night. I have had deer, Bobcat, owls and other protected animals come in to my calling. Then fun part is getting them close enough to shoot with a shotgun. If you have a 2 million candle power spotlight shining at something under 50 yrds you can tell what it is. But that story does make me a little leary about using my mouth calls. Because I do no there are a lot of unethical hunters(poachers) out there.

RE: Fatal hunting accident
In terms of risk I think it is perhaps an issue that it seems common practice to have several hunters at the same place at the same time without them knowing about each other. Of course there should always be taken into consideration that other people can occur in the wild. Am I correct in assuming that hunters are the ones most at risk?
I think it is wise to build security in layers and so improving the odds.
Educated hunters-only one hunter at the time-lwell known and clear laws regarding what situation is a noshoot- a living debate on security issues(such as this one) and so forth.
No single step will make it 100 % safe but the overall picture will come close. Darkness as well as rain, fog, snow will simply make for one layer less.

That's wonderful but the article wasnt' talking about a kid getting shot at night while coyote hunting.
NY maybe this just proved that you never even read the artical and just wanted to jump in on a night hunting subject and get people fired up so you could have another I want to argue post.In the six paragraph down it said---"He was hunting coyote in a field off Convoy Road about a half mile west of U.S. Route 127 when he was shot by another hunter in what appears to be an accident, the Van Wert County Sheriff reported. The shooting happened just after 9:30 p.m. Ellerbrock was using a recording device of a rabbit squealing, which is used to bring coyotes to an area. Another hunter in the area, Troy Clark, 36, was unaware Ellerbrock was nearby, the sheriff reported."
If you had read the artical you would have caught that right????? Please bicker somewhere else. To all the guys who read this and either learned or expressed sympathy a big thank you!!!

RE: Fatal hunting accident
Yes I did confuse that article with another one. I apologize for that. I have no problem with coyote hunting at night if it's legal. I do however have a huge problem with shooting at a deer at night. For some reason I was thinking of the article mt posted as the original thread article. My bad.
As far as this goes why don't you go back and see who wanted to turn it into an argument. I simply stated a human life isn't worth taking a game animal. Next thing you know I want hunting of all forms banned? Point your finger someplace else chief!
As far as "bickering" someplace else? I dont' know where your from, but if somebody is going to come after me, I'm not going to go hide in a corner and take it. They want to call me out ........... I'll come and play. Maybe you think I'm not allowed an opinion in YOUR forum?? You don't want to hear my bickering it's very simple.........don't ask for it.
One thing is for sure though. I'm not going anywhere to appease you or anyone else. You guys kill me. You post something addressing me specifically, asking me a question, disagreeing with me, etc... and expect me not to respond or youget upset when I do; like I don't have a right to reply?
