A deer is a deer, if it was a wild deer no one should be telling him not to shoot it anyway.

you must not have many deer on your land if you protect them that way
I do know what ya mean tho, an experienced hunter would have known better. I imagine you are more mad at your self than him for putting him in that situation.
The adjoining land owners kid is real posseive of the wild life and harrasses me to no end. The deer cross their land to feed on my land and I do not post so many of 'his' deer are killed on my land every year, he hates me! But everyone else is glad to be rid of so many deer, most everyday one is hit by a car on the hi-way that goes thru my property.

Cool as it would be to have the final word in this debacle i realize that I probably wont. I havent even bothered to read all 170 posts but will rather catch on the waiting or not waiting discussion.
In general there is no hurry to go after a wounded deer. If the deer is fatally shot it doesnt matter what you do, from a suffering point of view.If you wait long enough there will likely be less suffering for the deer. An early start keeps the deer from lying down wich it will do if left alone. An early start will more likley scare the deer since it is still pumped up with stress hormones and thus more alert. Left alone it will slowly begin to get into chock and be even more easy to get to. The chock prevents small blood vessels from retract and the strain on the heart increases. Often this leads to a shortage of blood supply to the brain and the animal appears drunk. The stress hormones usually keeps pain at bay for at least a few hours, so from that point of view suffering will not be affected much during that time.
So in short: By waiting the not fatally wounded deer oftengets drousy and easier to get. The stress of getting shot tends toprevent pain for a few hours.
Legally you can appearently search for the deer but not do anything but watch it run away into the night. Once it has begun to run again the drousyness wears of and pain sets in.
The end..... not likley?

Yes I do dd... I went thru that a few times myself. Because of my situation I have helped many people some youth get their deer. I try to practice QDM just as you are and it is tough, it's easy for me but I can't get the other people to care what size deer they get. It's still the most fun a guy can have and I have had to forgive many friends thru the years. I hope things work out for you in your QDM efforts.

Good grief NY. It must me tough being right all the time
but you also would let a deer suffer for hours when you could put it out of it's misery?

Again though, shooting a deer at night never has to be an option JMO. I see......... so the philosophy is this: Any deer you shoot you need to immediately start bloodtrailing/tracking it and find it before it expires to finish it off with a second shot so it doesn't "suffer" one more minute? In other words literally chase the deer after the shot? Are you being serious? That's really how you hunt?I'm surprised I dont' hear more shots at night ifit's true thatsthe way it should happen. Like someone else said I'm glad a lot of you don't bowhunt. There would be a lot of unrecovered deer in the woods.
Hey everyone has their opinion and it's obvious what they are. I find this situation having next to nothing to do with morally right thing to do or ethics. But whatever makes ya sleep at night I guess. It would be ethically wrong to go after that deer, jump it, have it run 3 counties away, leave you with no bloodtrail, and expire someplace for the coyotes to feast on.90% of the time that deer is off and running. The fact that DD was fortunate enough for that not to happen THIS time doesn't make it any better in my book. It's taking deer in an illegal manner period and I'm sorry but I justwont condone that.

I thought you were ignoring me. I was begining to think you didn't love me anymore. My New Years Resolution is to not argue on this thread or the dead deer in publics eye thread. So I guess I have today to get it all out. Where's Gus and the other nimrods?
