RE: Tips for late season muzzleloading hunting??
1st-plan on spending more time in the woods and make sure you have good cold weather gear.
2nd- Find places that either haven't been hit to hard or have good cover.
3rd i would say enjoy it, its my fav. time to hunt, you will usually have to the woods to yourself.
Plus i usually see more deer then i do in the reg. season

RE: Tips for late season muzzleloading hunting??
I have hunted this season for about 12 years now in Iowa and the one thing that it all depends upon is the weather. If we get alot of snow then those deer herd up and finding them is easy. If the weather does not stay cold then they are still scattered from shotgun hunting. There will be very little hunting pressure especially if you are still hunting around January. I like over looking picked corn fields or food sources if there is snow. The good part is that if you find a big buck he seldom leaves the area because of the lack of pressure and the need for bulking up after rut and hunting season.

Look for the food sources. After peak breeding deer are interested in putting on fat to get them through the winter. If you find a food source the deer are using, find the routes they use to get to it, and set up to take them in the afternoon. In my research I saw 3 times more deer in the evenings in December than I did in September, October or November. I also found that when it's below 20 degrees (F. or windchill) during the day, the deer may come out early in the afternoon to feed, as early as 1:30, especially if there are cloudy skies, which also cause deer to move earlier in the afternoon than normal. Cloudy skies also allow deer to stay in feeding areas later than normal in the morning.
Pay attention to the wind speed and direction. Deer like to feed out of the wind when they can, in woods, in low areas on the downwind side of hills or woods. If windspeeds exceed 10 mph they often stay in protected areas, if they can. If you have more questions on cold weather/late season deer hunting e-mail me and I'll send you some of my articles on the subject.
Good luck and God bless you and yours,
