Hunting With Long Range Pistols
Anyone here use long range handguns for hunting deer (ie: Contenders, Remington XP's, other)?
I have a Remington XP-100 in 7mm Bench Rest and have only killed a few does with it. I haven't hunted with in over 3 years so I got it out the other day and shot a few rounds through it. I can tell you this, I really need to practice. I could only get a 1 1/4" groups at 50 yards[:@]
One other question, for those of you that hunt more consistantly with a handgun. What is the longest range you have taken a deer with one?
Thanks

i have an encore w/15" barrel and a fixed 4X leupold, i have killed deer out to around 100 yrds, i would be comfortable to 150 with a gooooood rest, getting used to a pistol scope with the long eye relief and all was the toughest part for me, oh yea mine is a 7mm-08 and i've killed 3 bucks, and 11 or 12 does, i don't carry mine as much as i used to, the novelty has kinda worn off, plus most people will give your a bunch of grief if you say you brought your pistol and then pull something like a xp100 or encore out[:@]

Something about sawing off the barrel of a rifle, putting a scope on it and calling it a pistol seems a little strange to me. I guess I watched a few too many Gene Autry and Roy Rogers movies.

Since I started hunting with pistols I cant stand to lug a rifle, its just no fun anymore, I prefer the Mid grips like the Lone eagle in 7mm-08, the xp-100in 7br, 260, and 221 fireball, and the savage striker in 308. My best shot has been a coyote at 211 yards with the 7mm 08 this is a bit extreme for a pistol BUt I do use a fixed 7x burris and It was from a friends back porch with a sinclair rest up front and a bald eagle bag rear at a know range. in the field I dont usually go beyond 100 yds because I perfer head shots I dont take trophys and I hate to ghave to chase anything. Pistol hunting can be a good relif from your basic get in the blind shoot the deer go home hunt.
