Long range hunting bullet for .45
I have a .45 cal inline that is very accurate and I want to set it up for long range. I got a nikon scope with bdc and am going to buy a range finder soon. What would be the best .45 bullet out there for 200+ yards?
Thanks,

and the Barnes TSX http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/rifle/tsx-bullet/
This bullet has a high BC of .284.
There are very few bullets for the 45 and even fewer sabots. The SW is the best bet, as Lee said, but you could try these, since they are excellent bullets and it has a high BC and should fit that sabot.
Barnes sells a MLer bullet for the 45: http://www.barnesbullets.com/products/muzzleloader/expander-mz/
It would be excellent to 175, and maybe with 150 of powder in your gun could get to 200, you would have to test.

For long range one of the best is the 200gr SW the next best is the 200gr 40 cal XTP MMP makes th sabot for them. Lee

The other posts about the 200 grain Shockwave/SST are dead on. I use the 200 grain XTP which is a great bullet, but I'm not sure about shooting 200+ yards with it. I'd say it's a 150-175 yard bullet. For really long ranges you're going to want a pointed bullet with a high BC driven at high velocities. You'll also need a rangefinder. Another option are Dead Centers - I haven't tried them, but they look good on paper. I've heard reports about erratic accuracy from them, though.

What are the bullet choices for the 45? I know there is the .40 200g sst/xtp/sw, but are there any heavier options? The heavier weight (to carry energy and reduce wind drift, less drop is only an advantage if you still have the energy for a clean kill) is really what you will need past 200yds.

Hoss, there isn't much out there that is heavier than 200 grains unless you're shooting a conical or powerbelt. Precision Rifle makes a .40 cal 220 & 240 grainer - www.prbullet.com/pts.htm
Those arethe only ones heavier than 200 grains that I know of. Powerbelts come in 275 grains, but they're a conical and not going to perform as well at long range because of lower BC and SD. PR also makes some .357 cal 195 grainers that have really good BC and SD for a muzzleloader bullet.
I haven't personally used any of these, but I would guess that the 220 or 240 grain PR bullet would be thebestlong-rangeperformer for a .45 if you can get themto group well.

hossdaniels,I found that heavier than 210 they got hard to stablize with a 1-28 twist now if you happened to have a 1-20 twist then some of the Dead Centers I believe they make them up to 240 gr. Now I shoot 200 and 240 yds and it is myopinion that the combination of .269 Bc and the speed which a 200 gr canbe pushed to is not likly to be matched; a couple of my frieds are using the in Savages with smokeless With excellant results.
