If I had the money I would have mounted the button buck my daughter shot on our first ever hunt. . It would have helped to remind me every day of how much that day meant. It had nothing to do with the size of the deer. I would have used that mount so I could tell the story to everyone that would listen. I do it here, in these forums.

I never considered mounting my buck that I got last year (my first deer) It just didn't have the same meaning. Was it exciting ? Yes. Just never thought about it.

I'm new though and maybe one day I will let many deer walk for the chance at a big deer. In the places that I have available to me to hunt, I'm lucky to see a deer that day. So for now every deer is a trophy (not necessarily a mount).

Why not? I understand your point and how you do it, but why would this type of hunting not be accepted in your area?

Because the land in this part of the country is all private. If you dont own land then you either have towait for an invitation, get ona deer lease, or buy a package hunt(s)? For the most part landowners in this part of the state look down on certain types of deer hunters.Guys who have an itchy trigger finger are onetype. If you go on a package hunt you are only going to be allowed to shoot mature animals, no questions asked. If you get on a lease chances are thatif you bring in an immature buckyour going to be hunting on a different lease next year. As is the case with any rule there are exceptions.......

They are all trophys to some, all mine are trophys. But when I give a seminar on using scents. I use a deers age to determine Trophy status. And 99% of the time people want to hear me talk about Trophy Bucks. I once shot a Doe that field dressed at 253lbs. I hunted her hard for 2 years before I fianlly gother. I passed on 2bucks that would go 170-180 because I was after her ----! That Blowen bitty ruined some pretty good hunts. Was she a Trophy? You betcha! And she tasted good too.

First, you are right. none of us here NEED the meat to survive, or else we wouldn't be here at all. Yes, i like it, but no, would not starve without it.

I've killed all kinds of deer by my 22 yrs. of age. big, small, old young, buck, doe. I personally find that shooting a young buck iseasier than shooting an adult doe or mature buck, the young guys just don't seem as 'aware'. so, I like to challenge myself of waiting it out for a mature animal, male or female(any doe really), actually coming to draw without being busted, making the right shot, and takingthe animalfor a truck ride.

If the animal is worthy of a wall mount(and i have the money) it goes there.

People have the right to be proud of any animal they kill. IMO a trophy hunter is the guy who pays for the canned hunt just to have the mount in his office, den, living room, to show his buddies,"look what I shot" And with that same guy, i don't think that donating the meat makes it any different. if it helps him sleep thats fine i just don't get it.

and before this turns into a 5 page contest of who wants to use more quotes, let me say that everyone has the right to do what they want, but some people's motivation just makes me wonder sometimes.

let's ride

Thats one of the arguements the anti hunting folks use "they don't need the meat to survive,so why hunt". Better watch what you say. I kill deer so my family has good healthy meat to eat and it cuts food costs. I have never been able to understand a "Trophy Hunter" sounds like the wall is more imporant than the meat. If thats the case why hunt, for braging rights? That gives the Anti's a good arguement. A big Racked Buck is nice and I will take one if given the chance but I won't take money away from the family so I can Bragg about a buck I paid 2000$ for on a faraway hunt. This just an opinion not a judgement.
