For anybody thats hunted caribou. I shoot a 30-06 for deer with factory 165 grain corelokts. These bullets don't hold together too well when they hit the rib of a deer, so using them for 'bou is out of the question. I will probably use Federal or Remington 165, or 180 grain Nosler Partitions, and was wondering if I would need the high energy or standard loads? Also how long are the shots on 'bou usually? I shot my deer last year at 325 yards.

shot a bou last year pushing 350-400. 7mm mag, one shot blasted right through 150 grain bullets. Wife shot one the year before 100-125 yards, 30/30, 170 grains, blasted right through. Shot a bou last yr with the 7mm same set up, did some serious damage to the front shoulder. Bought her a ruger 270 this year figured she would shoot the 100 grains! Bou are thin skinned critters, wide but not terribly tough. I am not telling ya to go light however, most folks go heavier due to bears....other then that its longbows <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>!

Maybey the corelokts aren't out of the question. I'll probably just stick with the corelokts because they shoot good in my rifle and I like to see the bullet use up all of its energy inside the animal. I thought they (caribou) were a little tougher than that.

I prefer the 180 grain Federal Premiums for my 30-06. I would imagine that your 165 grains should be sufficient. Especially if your gun shoots better with them. Shot placement is a lot more critical.

asked one of my partners today about it...couldnt believe the answer I got! His inlaws (live in an village in the western arctic area) are shooting bou with 243's!! He wasnt sure what weight bullet they were shooting but I am sure it wasnt heavy LOL!
