Slee,
I know the Skookumchuck area a little bit and there are some good elk numbers down there. A lot of private land down there past the coal plant but you can get into some access on the Weyerhauser land. Just find one of their elk highways, hike in a bit and sit tight. May take a couple trips to locate the herd in their cycle but I think it's a good bet. The only thing you may want to look into is Weyerhauser permission. I think they sell permits for like $10 or something. It's been a while so I can't say for sure. Last time I was out there I counted about 50 in the herd with a couple good bulls.

Slee,
The Skook is pretty good but lots of pressure. Last year i helped fish & wildlife putt a spike someone poached off the pheasant release area. A good spot is Thompson Creek Road on the left side you will see a power line follow it until you cross a road go left then down toward the river you'll find lots of deer & elk sign Up on the ridge I've seen some Cows & does. Bucoda off Little Hanford road there is plenty of Paper CO land to hunt. Just watch out for private lands. That whole area from Skook to the Steam plant is great it's actually one big heard that splits up you can find them any place from Johnson CR RD to the Steam Plant. I'd try to hunt away from the Steam plat the know it's safe there & you'll see deer & elk along the road bedded right next to no hunting signs. Good luck

Thanks for the heads-up Titianhunter. I actually hunted off Thompson Creek Rd last year for the early elk season. Didn't beat the hunters in there in December, and ended up pulling out for the late hunt and moving over to Area 21 & 22 on the south end of Ft. Lewis. I had 2 reports right before the late season that 2 small herds were spotted in there. The problem with that area is you get bird hunters and dog training trials going on on weekends, so that can screw you up. If nothing else looks good, I'll likely be back to the Skook. I've logged a lot of miles in there off Johnson Creek Rd and Thompson Creek Rd looking for elk and turkeys. You may can tell me more, but when I drove in by the steam plant last November, almost all the land on both sides of the road is posted No Trespassing.
If you think of anything else, shoot me an e-mail. I'm looking for a late season spot right now. Hopefully with a little less pressure than the Skookumchuck area. Do you know anything about the east end of the Skook just south of Alder Lk.? Seems like a ton of timber co land in there too.
Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em!

Robb, I hope you have a great hunt. I can only imagine how bad you've been missing the seasons here in WA. Soak up the events and the scenery. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll be able to tag something. But most of all, have fun.
