Kramer,
Sorry I didn't see your post on the Skookumchuck until now. I guess it got lost in the page break. If you are willing, could you shoot me an e-mail. I'd like to talk specifics with you. I've spent some time in there around Johnson Creek on both sides of the river chasin' turkeys, deer, and elk. Any info would be a big help. I ain't afraid of doing the legwork. I've never been as far east as the Vail Tree Farm, but I've been thinking about looking farther east of the reservoir and even closer to Hwy 7.
Hunt hard, live right, and tell your kids you love 'em!

Slee,
I haven't checked the board for a few days (bird hunting) so I just saw your request. The first thing I think you will need to do is check with Weyerhauser about accessing their land out there. I think you may need an access permit but I'm not sure. Other than that land out there everything else is private. There is a good sized herd of elk out there and you should have a good chance at them but I'd hate to steer you into an illegal situation. Like I said in my other post it's been a while since I've been out there hunting. If you wanted to do some scouting of the area drive out through Bucoda and take a left on Big Hanaford Road (I think) turn and head out past the coal plant. Keep on going until you see the yellow gates. There will be one at the end of that road and one about a mile from the end. The majority of the elk I've seen have been migratingon a path between the two gates and into the fields.
Let me know what Weyerhauser has to say.

I haven't actually called Weyerhauser about it, but from what I understand from several guys who hunt out there and other Weyco lands you don't need a permit. I've hunted it a dozen times between deer, elk, and turkey seasons, and have never seen a Weyco truck in there. As far as I know, the only Weyco land that requires a permit is the land north of and around Enumclaw. But I will call and post back. Thanks for the info.

Evening all, hope all is well, we made it back to Washington safe and sound. I went out hunting on Saturday and saw a bunch of deer, but I shot my buck on Sunday morning around 8 o'clock, nice 3x4 whitetail, saw some nice bucks in the area we were hunting, now my uncle and brother have to fill their tags!!!

Got my first ever mule deer Saturday opener - Nice 3x3 came down the hill with 15 does. Right after cleanin' him out, 3 more bucks came down the hill across from me (all 2x2 mulies), but then, the monster buck showed up about 150 yds from where I had shot my 3x3. That BIG buck came down with a doe and was at least a 5x5 - I mean it was HUGE. The thing sat in the bushes about 500 yards away, and I could make out his rack w/out using binoculars. I was hoping he'd be pushed over towards my dad, but he got up and headed out. About 20 minutes later, a hunter came walking across the top - if only he had come through a little earlier, he might have pushed that thing right into my dad. Oh well - I guess it is called "hunting" and not "finding" for a reason - but I got mine! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hello all!
This is my first time to this board I just stumbled across it tonight. I have already seen some great info and would like to join in. I will be taking my 14 yr old son bow hunting this year, he has been with me before but this is the first year he is legal to hunt.
I'm looking for an area to hunt deer and elk, last year I hunted on Fort Lewis and took a small doe, also hunted in the skookum on the back side of the vail tree farm. Only problem with vail it's all walk in! I don't mind the walk in but if you get an elk down what a chore!
Does anybody know of an area on Fort Lewis that has some elk? Any pointers would be helpfull.
May the force be with you!!!!
