I always carried a 357 with hot handloads, but I think a Glock model 20 10mm with Hicap
Magazine would do nicely. I saw a show with Ted Nugent when he had to use his on a Kudu or one of the other larger plains game. He shot it with his bow, but as he was tracking it, the critter decided to take on the Nuge.
The Nuge won.

Greets,
While everyone has made good and valid posts, some are missing my question. I wanted advice for a sidearm for protection, if needed, and killshots when I screw up ( hopefully never but it already happened once ) so with that in mind, it should be small enuff to carry in the feild without undue discomfort, large enuff to get the job done in one shot at close quarters, and yet still small enuff that it can be rapidly deployed ( ie I dont wanna get mauled trying to unlimber a .485 hand cannon with a ten inch barrel... is their even such a gun LOL)
Any how, that said, tanks for the advice all, and keep coming with it as it will be some time before I have the funds for this purchase. I am teetering between the .357 and a good .44mag. Since I am used to an auto with a double action firts shot, it does need to be a DA ( hate to become luch cause I forgot to cock the darned thing! )
again thanks to all and good, and safe , hunting.
Terry

I went through the same reasoning for carrying a hand gun about 2 years ago, after my brother in law was mauled by a brownie. I am not going to tell you what cal. is best for you, however I have to reinforce what USA said.
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>leave as little to chance as possible.....i.e. a revolver <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>
Less chance of something going wrong in an emergency when you are rolling around in the dirt and mud trying to get shots off to save your life.

I CARRY A .44 MAG. RUGER SUPER BLACKHAWK REVOLVER. A .454 CASULL WOULD BE BETTER HERE IN ALASKA SOMETIMES BUT IF YOU ARE WANTING IT FOR WASH. A .44 IS PLENTY. I DON'T KID MYSELF IF I HAVE A CLOSE ENCOUNTER LIKE SE AK BOWMAN'S BROTHER IN LAW HAD WITH A BROWN BEAR THEN A .375 WIN MAG RIFLE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH.

I haven't done much hand gun hunting for the last few years (none in fact). Prior to that I used a .357 and a .44mag.

Lilhunter,
that link shows me a gun I would surely love to have, unfortunately the price tag is a bit hefty, but one day I will own one, if for no other reason than I WANT IT! *G*
( Sorry guys my gun collector side comes out.. good thing I aint rich, I would spend it on guns... Or, IS it??? )
Just my uneducated opinion!

I had the chance to check one over, man he does some nice work. I think this guy had some 'add ons' from the base price but from what the hole group said it was a scweet shooting pistol. I lived up to the recoild of only a 44mag as advertised!
