I went through the same reasoning for carrying a hand gun about 2 years ago, after my brother in law was mauled by a brownie. I am not going to tell you what cal. is best for you, however I have to reinforce what USA said.

Less chance of something going wrong in an emergency when you are rolling around in the dirt and mud trying to get shots off to save your life.
