Any one on this board do the high alpine hunts?
I saw an article in washington oregon game and fish on em and they sound like a slick way to go, but i dont want to have to buy all the gear just to find its not much more than a tough hike.
thanks, Ken

I'm assuming you mean the wilderness area east of Seattle. I used to backpack a lot in there in my nonhunting days in the mid-1990s. I've hiked a lot of ground between Stevens and Snoqualmie passes. I never saw a really big muley, although certain locations had good populations. Elk are very scattered, and I think you have to draw a special tag to shoot a non-spike bull. But there was always a monster bull or two in one drainage I loved to hike in. I voice cowcalled a 320 class bull into camp one morning and couldn't get him to leave!

plan on spending lots of time hiking, lots of time glassing. bring good optics. don't' go planning on killing a monster buck...they are hard to come by. plan on all the weather from 70 degrees to snow. it is a great time in an incredible place, but deer are few and far between. think about doing a drop camp, about $600.00, and you are allowed 150lbs of gear per person. outfitter will pack you in and drop you off, some will come back every couple days to check on you, some won't. i think you could reasonably expect to kill a legal buck, but don't go forr that...go for the experience of it. you will not be sorry.

I back pack Oregon wilderness areas in the summer and have seen some HUGE Bucks. I would really like to hunt them but It is about 10 miles from the nearest road and a steep incline. How the hell would you get your meat out?

Sorry for not replying sooner i got caught up in "not hunting stuff"- argh!
But, yes I'm refering to Packing in and hopefully finding an animal and boneing it out and returning with the meat and head. Soundsreal easy and romantic sitting here at the computer in 80 degree weather but something tells me the story is going to change in the field.
I was looking to hunt the Henry M Jackson wilderness area.
My questions are :
[ul][*]what isneeded for gear ? Is this a rocky area that you had better have rock climbing skill for? or is it trails that someone has a chance at?[*]What is the weather like around there? rainy and cold or sunny and 72? [/ul]
I guess any info about the area would be helpfull
Thanks for the help, Ken
