I'm putting together a bowhunting trip for elk in Colorado and wanted to get opinions as to the best time to go. I've heard that early season was best but that it can be very hot during that time. I've also heard last week was good but was concerned that pressure from bow hunting and then muzzleloaders would have them headed for the hills. Any comments?

It's been raining & lightening in Durango for two weeks, so the animals are not herding up yet. The first week of archery, they'll begin herding again which can be used to your advantage. An experienced hunter can spot-n-stalk, hunting in a blind on water holes will be good, also. Typically in our area Sept 17th, the rut starts full swing. I'm an outfitter in Durango - and have been doing a lot of scouting this month in preparation. There's some NICE bulls out there. Contact me if you need more info. [email protected]

I like the last two weeks of the season. Packing in beyond 2-3 miles puts you past the road hunters (both archery and muzzleloaders). Use their pressure on the wapiti to your advantage. Spot, stalk and hound seems to be my best way of doing it.
