Locator Calls
#1
Has anyone else notice that the more turkeys become hunted that the locator calls don't seem to work as well as they used too?I beleive that turkeys in general are wise to them and don't respond as well.Used to be able to owl hoot in the morning and insite many gobbles, now I find it better to just shut up and listen.

On the farms that I hunt... There is a huge drop off in gobbling after the first 2 weeks of season. I believe the turkeys gobble less for 2 reasons. Most of the hens have been bred so they aren't needing to call as many to them by gobbling. Also...they know they are being hunted and don't want to give away their location by gobbling. Usually they gobble throughout the season on the roost at least several times...but after those first couple weeks....those gobbles on the ground are few and far between.

Most of my turkey hunting land is public land. It's also usually "hunted out" by the local yocals before the opener![:@] Any turkeys that are left are already call shy to any call--turkey or locator. I've never had a response to a crow call and the owl hoots have only met with success a couple times in 15 years. When you try to roost a bird or locate one before first light, it's not uncommon to suddenly find the woods "alive" with owl calls coming from every direction. When any bird that gobbles finds the owls heading his way, he learns quick to shut up.
