Slate works best for me, but not good if wet. Use mouth calls for backup and together.
Have you ever made wood box calls. I got a large cedar tree that loggers cut down and left behind to rot and have made some pretty good sounding calls. I'm having problems with the boxes requiring a paddle, can't get the right shape on them.
Something you might be interested in trying. If you have access to a stream or river where you can find muscle shells, take the shell and dry and clean it, then take a striker from one of your other calls and strike the inside of the shell, it makes an emergency call if you lost or broke one and didn't want to quit hunting. It won't be as loud but it will work.

Never had a real favorite..use all of them..like mouth calls best..but just got an American Friction Alumaglass and it just may become my favorite friction call. It's so easy to use..sounds real good and easy to change tones with.
