I have used slate and glass calls, with some mouth calls all my life. I am looking into getting a good box call. The reason I havnt really used them in the past is I just bought cheap ones that didnt work very well. What would be a good box call to buy?

Box Calls come in a number of different kinds sizes and makes. I find wood tends to have a better sound over plastic. There is the Common Original box , then you have Boat Paddles that are used more for volume. QuakerBoy has the 10-sider that one can use to make a number of different tones with the one call. There also is a number of Custom box calls out , some are collectors and others are useable , what ever you would perfer. Custom Calls are made of higher end wood and there is far more time put into the call , but the $ value is higher aswell. As in strikers Box calls can have different sound with different woods.
Some here like BrokenBucket use Custom calls and can maybe give you the hunting angle of these calls...BT

Last spring I purchased an American Friction Cut-N-Paddle box call. It is a boat paddle style call. This call has won numerous awards so I figured it must sound good and I wasn't disappointed. The sounds this call makes is awesome, from soft calls to loud locating yelps. It has a Honduran mahogany bottom with a red cedar paddle and is signed and dated by callmaker Bruce Wurth. Paddle calls are a little longer than a regular box call so if size is a consideration, then you might want to look into a smaller box. But if this style of call interests you, I can endorse this call as one that is made well, looks great and sounds even better! Check it out at www.americanfriction.com.

I'll give you a plug here BT....Quakerboy's mini boat paddle is proven on more than one hunt in my time. It'll do most anything you need it to do.Personally I use it on windy days and/or when a gobbler is still a distance off.It also is a great sounding back-up call to my mouth calls in creating a more than one hen situation because it has a great sounding rasp all its own...heres a look..

Bob , The thing I like about the Mini Boat paddle is the size, in most pockets it fits just right. The higher pitch is nice on the windy days for sure. I'm not much of a box call carryer because of the size of most...BT

Bob and Adrian, I agree with you both on the Quaker Boy Mini-Boat Paddle box call, great choice. Adrian hit it right on the nose with the fact that due to it's size, it can fit inside your vest much easier than the bigger boat paddle calls!!
