Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default RE: when do you use the different calls?

For me, I think every one of them work well at anytime. In the morning when the birds are about to fly down, very soft yelps are the best, so when the tom in the tree hears that small yelp, he knows a hen is there and the first thing he is gonna do when he flies down is come looking for it. So if you hear him gobble after a few yelps, get ready, he knows you're there.

I've heard callers who can make a turkey call do things that seem impossible. That still ain't anywhere NEAR as good as the real thing. So, I try not to give them any more than they require to respond. I'll start out with a cluck, then move to soft yelps and feeding/social noises, then get louder and more agressive with the yelps, and, after a while, do some cutting. If I am on private land and SURE I'm alone, I might try a gobble just before I leave and start over somewhere else. The biggest and oldest tom I ever took was with only 3 clucks. Sometimes less is better.

Good luck with your season!

Bigone, this to me is really what seperates the turkey callers and turkey hunters. You can be a great sounding turkey caller but a lousy turkey hunter because you dont know when and what call to use in a given situation in the turkey woods.I always like feeling a gobbler out and let him dictate what he wants to hear in my calling.A good rule of thumb if he is hot get aggressive if not give him less.Really though I believe experience in the woods &quot;in hunting situations&quot; gives the hunter a real edge on those who dont quite understand turkey talk.Theres so many situations we can find ourselves in on a days hunt, from the roost,to the ground, with hens, without, call shy, hung up and so on.To give you one call or a bunch would be diificult to do to solve every situation. But I will say this being able to read a gobblers mood and interest in your calling can help considerably in knowing what calls to make to him to bring him your way. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
