Default 3 1/2" Ammo suggestions

My nephews and brother have me drooling for turkey season, up until this year I've only been an avid deer/bear hunter. So I bought a Mossberg 535 Tactical Turkey 12 gauge w/ Mossy oak breakup, 6 pt adjustable stock, pistol grip, fiber optic sights, and a XX-full choke (640). Looking to see what your favorite 3 1/2's are. My brother uses Winchester supreme elites but $45 for 10 is kind of rediculous in my opinion. Looking to stay under $3/round.

Look at it this way. You are only going to shoot one or two shots when you turkey hunt each Spring, so why not go with the best the gun will shoot. I have a Model 1200 Winchester I bought in 1967 and it's got a 2 3/4" chamber. I use the Winchester Extended Range #5 or #6s because of the pattern and number of shot they produce in my gun at 40 yards. I'm on my last couple shells and will probably have to buy another box this year, but may just use my #5 pheasant loads because they are about as good.

I tend to agree with going with the best. Once you get your gun patterned, a box can last a few seasons, depending on how much you hunt. Patterning can be a problem, though, it kills me to try an expensive box of shells only to find they don't pattern well. I trade a few shells with friends so we can each try different shells without buying a box. Saves a little money that way. Good luck.

Win HV #5's!!!

From what everybody says about mossbergs being the greatest shotgun on earth they should be good out to 40 yards... I know they are in all of my Remingtons

Check some of the choke manufacturers websites or even call them. I know the guy that does Indian Creek has patterned most every popular turkey gun with his choke brand choke tube and can suggest some shells.

Also, look for a sporting goods store that sells individual shells. You might even talk them into selling them individually if they don't already. Both of the ammo places near me do this.

I bought 5 Nitro brand shells just yesterday. I put 1 in the chamber and back it with a couple cheaper shells in case I need a follow up shot.

You should see good results from the Mossberg. Their barrels are overbored and typically have good patterns.

IMO the only time 3 1/2" ammo is worth using is on coyotes. You'll do just fine with the smaller shells.

I have a Mossberg 535 turkey gun with the same setup as yours. I use 3 1/2 shells. And have killed birds with it out to almost 70 yards, mine patterns very good with number 5 Federal Flight control loads and for 10 shells they are less then 20 dollars and i have never had a bird that has ever needed a second shot with this combination.

I would have to agree with you and you have all the gun and size of shell to get it done.
