Default Best mouth call to learn on??????

I am new to turkey hunting. I got a Cody slate call for christmas which I am planning to use for the up coming season. I would also like to learn to use a mouth call. Which one would be the easiest to learn on. And what is the difference in split reed, raspy, etc. Thank you for any help.

Yep, I think the double D is the easier mouthcall to start learning on. The splits and cuts are a bit harder.

If you plan on getting into the Turkey Hunting Sport or just want to try a different call this season , here is a little "Tip" to keep in mind.
There are two different types of Mouth calls on the market "Clear" and "Raspy" depending on the thickness of the latex and Number of reeds, one maybe easyer to use then an other, it also depends on the persons Lung air volume. Any call that has straight reeds in it is a Clear call and the others with Split "V"'s and Cut's of any kind will be a Raspy call, some more then others. Mouth calls are made all different for different sounds and pitches , some you can do specific call or calls better then others. If you ever have a Clear, two or three reeded call that don't work to your liking, take and put a little cut (very) little cut in the longest reed you will notice a Rasp to the call. The longer the cut the more rasp your going to get untill you reck it (lol). I can only speek out for QuakerBoy calls as I'm not sure on other brands, but the Screemin green Pro triple is a good starter Call because of the latex thickness , and the White latex, Raspy Triple is another easy call to use.You will find that the "V" Yelp nice, and you can roll into raspy cutting. The Cutter calls are good for Cutting and Flydowns. The average hunter would not know this because most times he just stays with 1 -2 calls believe me every mouth call out there has a different sound and pitch. Some are good for some and not for others. You just need to find what will work best for you...BT

Good explaination BT. The call I found easiest to learn on was a Lohman #820 double reed. The reeds are thin and easy to blow. The tape used on them also has some texture and didn't slide around as much in my mouth as other calls I tried. Now I use them all. But I always keep one of those #820 for old time sakes.

Best of Luck!

Good advice from all!I would say a double reed call, and am a little partial to what Brokenbucket has recommended.Be patient with whatever you choose to learn on.Dont just expect the call to start throwing out all kinds of mistake free turkey music right off the bat.It will take awhile for the call to start feeling comfortable in your mouth and alot of diaphragms need a little breaking in time till they perform to there maximum capabilties. The other thing is practice, practice, practice!Good luck my friend!
