Check into these two sites: www.hevishot.com and www.nitrocompany.com These sites should explain any questions that you might have concerning hevishot. Like you, I have ben using the Winchester 3" HV loads for the last two seasons now myself. But even though these Winchester loads are the one of the best out there, this hevishot stuff is comming on strong. The Hevishot pellets are heavier than lead!! So you can use a #6 hevishot pellet and it will hit as hard as a #5 lead. Now just think of the much "DENSER" pattern while using #6's VS #5's. Add hevishot and the right choke, and Bingo, the ultimate turkey killer!!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hevi-shot is made by Remington. They say its heavier than lead, and can shoot like steel. I've never tried it but one guy used it for ducks and said it was great. I believe he also said it was $22 for 10 shells, or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, he said it was expensive, but it worked good.

I started shooting the Nitro Hevi-shot with the Rhino choke tube designed for hevi-shot and couldn't be happier with the pattern. If you are looking for a super tight pattern, this combo will will get you that for sure.

Some extra notes on Hevi shot.
In the winter 2002 edition of Turkey and Tukey hunting magazine there was a good discussion on Hevi Shot. The author stated that Hevi shot has a Rockwell hardness in excess of gun barrel steel. After firing 450 shots he noticed that the Hevi shot will leave scores and streaks in forcing cones, barrels and chokes. Risking to shoot out the barrel was a trade for increased performance in his opinion. Also the article stated that a Remington factory representative stated that a traditional modified choke (must be able to shoot steel) will result with a 88% pattern where as the .675 Hevi Shot choke patterns at 92%. I'm sure that an 88% pattern is more than enough to drop a bird at 35 yards. Something else to look into?

Ive been using a 10ga BPS for about 10 yrs for goose and cannot count the geese I've lost with steel. This year I went to a 12ga with 3" no 2 hevi-shot. WOW!! they really do the trick! Never lost a bird. I am going to use it this spring for turkeys instead of the 10ga.
Hevi-shot is definitely worth looking into even with the added cost.

RE: Hevi Shot......
I went to hevi-shot 5s last year. Was considering investing in a turkey choke tube, but after reading a little about hevi-shot I bought a box to see if it improved my pattern with the regular full choke in my gun. It was amazing how tight it patterned out of the regular choke. I took a tom at about 35 yards last spring and it had five pellets in just the skull, two in the beak. I didn't bother counting the neck region. I'm sold on the stuff. It is expensive, but it only took a couple of shells to sight in. Then it is not to bad with the limits in numbers of turkeys I can take. Still have six shells for this season.
