They MUST be scattered to ALL points of the compass, or you have simply gained excersize! Fall hunting can be combination of slippin, slitherin. crawling & upraised from your knees as you try & keep contact. That is REAL turkey hunting!

As was said above fall birds are very patternable. That is probally the easiest way to kill fall longbeards.find the feed and wait em out.Them ole longbeards just ain't very interested in much but eatin. Now if ya want some real fun find a family flock(hens and younguns)Get a good scatter, plop your butt down at the scatter sight and wait for all hell to break loose.imagine 20 to 30 birds commin at ya from all directions callin their heads off. You'll hear lots of kee-keein and kee-kee runs.just imitate what ya hear.remember these birds are scared to be alone so put some feelin into your calls. If ya hear 1 bird sittin still just yelpin her butt off.get up and run her off.that's the old boss hen ,they know her voice and they'll go straight to her.To get the best scatter, bust em off the roost while it's dark.(evenin or mornin)they'll scatter in every direction.if ya get a scatter in the evenin,be at the scatter sight before first light.soon as it starts gettin light they'll be goin nuts.if ya scatter durin daylight just set up and if they've never been bothered before it'll only be a matter of minutes till they try gettin back together.if this flock's been scattered before it may take a little longer but be patient. It's like the movie Field Of Dreams. If ya call em,they will come!

Being Jalvja , don't see any humour in my posts anymore , I will stand on more of a serious note from here on in. GEZZZZZZZZ- Crabby , don't make the world go around [&o]
Fall Turkey hunting can be done in a number of ways. As some of our professional people above have gave their tricks that give them the success that they get in the fall, I will allow my thoughts to wander as well.
I have fall hunted a number of times and have been successfull at it as well. Just a side note, to the hunting that is so much unlike the spring hunt, I still find it exciting to sit in the fall woods and enjoy the time. The hunt is so much different and I enjoy the way a hunter has to change his tactics to work these birds.
I have learned a number of things over the years and from some our own Crabby Turkey hunters on this board
Years back I was lucky enough to get invited to MI and exsperence the Fall hunting tactic's of a turkey dog. It was kinda neet to see this dog react to how it was trained to scatter flocks of fall birds and then back off to allow the hunters to get into place and call the family flock back.
I spent one season with Jalvja on the board where we scattered a falmily flock and then proceeded to call the birds back to our location. After the scatter we setup as close to the scatter point as we could and used calls like the assembly call and Kee-Kee-run call and I was lucky enough to take a first year jake/poult.
The next day or so we had info on a flock of family birds that roosted in a hollow from a bow hunter and headed there the next morning. I was the one , yes I was the guy that went into the dark canynon and walked along the side into the darkness to find the flock. I did and got a nice scatter that allowed Jalvja and Jannette to call 2 different birds at different times to the point of setup at the scatter location and they walked out happier then the 4th of July.
Last year was another different tactic , that I will say that Jalvja again was behind. He watched this group of Gobblers work this field edge for a week. I showed up and one afternoon I got setup along this travel path with Jalvja behind the same tree watching the short cut through the woods. Jalvja , don't like to sit in a thick area and it is hard to keep this guy in a place he don't like to be, but as we sat and we were quiet only calling the very odd time with plain soft yelps and clucks. I noticed the group of birds moving down the field edge we were on.
I didn't tell or say anything to Jalvja at the time because I was going to allow the birds to come into range and then take that sudden shot that he would walk different back to the truck
and it was a long walk
Well as the birds came into range, I hear all kinds of moving behind me at the tree
Wonder what that is I thought. So at the last minute I had to say, Don't move ! darn he screwed up my plans [&o]
As the birds came into range, they disapeared behind the thick cover. So I eased up and there they were 30 yards out all feeding away. I picked out the larges bearded bird and gave it to him. I killed a nice longbeard and yes jim was acccountable for that. After pic's we walked back to the truck and Jalvja walked ok with no funny walking

3 things hmmmmmm. First I locate the flock.
Second I either seperate them or get where they are going and wait.
Third I Call to them softly and make sure my cheek is on the stock when I aim!
Now for Gobblers.
They are a little tougher. You must locate them as well but the scattering does not work as wellbecause they dont care if they get back together right away.It may be days before they decide to hook up again. Most times you must pattern them and wait them out calling sparingly. Clucks seem to be the call of choiceif you do decide to scatter them. Give them more time to respond than hens and poults.
