I have a dilemma
I just got a new blackpowder double barrel shotgun and I've worked up a good effective load for it out to 40yds. Opening day will be the first time I take this gun afield ....I think. I really want to kill a bird with it, BUT, I really want to kill a bird with my bow also. Last year was my first year turkey hunting. My brother in law called in a jake and I shot it with my .50 percussion ML. This year I'm leaving the .50 at home and I'll try to get one each with the shotgun and the bow, but which one first? I just can't decide! And I've been practicing calling for a year now. Do I let him call in the first one just to be sure or should I give it my best shot and fall back on him only if I need to? He is pretty good at calling although I'll never tell him that!

Since shootin one with the bow means everythin has to be perfect.I'd use the gun first. You may have a few birds come in that won't give ya a bow shot but could be taken with a gun.Get the gun one first and that gives ya more time to get one with the bow.As for callin it's alot easier with a bow if someone else is callin. It diverts the birds attention from you and gives ya a better chance to draw the bow without gettin busted.

I agree, take the gun first. That way if you never do geta good bow shot, you still may get a bird. The calling part is up to you. It can definately help having the calling come from a different spot then where you are with the weapon.

try the bow first...but let him call...your already trying to do something that will take all your skill and concentration....let him sit somewhere behind you off to one side....this way the turkeys are looking for the him...not directly in your direction...the shotgun hunting is a little more forgiving...good luck

RE: I have a dilemma
I would take the shotgun first and then my bow. I would rather have one on the ground and then try my bow and not get a shot at one period. I would say call on your own. That way you use your skills and not someone elses. Its more rewarding.
