bowhunter, sounds like a good turkey getter to me. How do you like that DB blind. I just got one a month or so ago.

salt, I get mine from my local pro shop. I don't have an arrow saw, so I get raw shafts, he cuts them and I take them home and build them. There are places you can get them from, like eders and such, but I figure they are expensive enough without having to pay shipping. Looks like a good pattern to me.

oneshot, your Muzzy will do the trick. No worries about that. I shoot a big 2" Rocket Hammerhead. More damage the better with them small vitals.

Even though I stictly bowhunt, I went to BassPro and got a new shotgun today. My son will be using it for turkey and I will use it mostly for dove and such. It's a Stoeger P-350 12 ga. I like it well so far.

I love the DBB it is great used it last year for turkey and had them sitting in my lap. and as for the arrows I make my own as well I set up up a dremel tool used it to cut off and put taper on my shafts.
last year I took my time to hunt turks being retired I have plenty of time to hunt so why end it on the first day ecspecially when I have two hundred turkies roosting near my deer hunting place it was great hunting deer out of the double bull as well. I dont think I will go back to tree stands ( I have a climber I might be selling here soon if the boy does not want it). I had a freind at the machine shop make up some addapters for for my shafts going to try to get Guillotine broadhead on the second bird. here are some of the turkes around my feeder.

I was cutting a dead White Ash this AM and had several toms gobbleing to my chain saw .

I can't wait till Apr 25 .

BTW if I don't check back in for a few day's , don't worrie , I am just to busy getting stuff done so I can take a week or 3 off to hunt .

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Dev, you are correct. You don't have to use the first bird, but check it in anyway. Pat keeps good records of that and he will use the biggest bird you post.

Bowhunter, um........can I go turkey hunting with you this spring? You got a few birds around.........apparently. :D

john, I know....these guys are INSANE!! I am here everyday, sometimes twice a day, and I can barely keep up. Like I said last week, I don't know if we'll win or not, but we are certainly going to have some fun! Hey, you just get all those chores done so you can spend some time in the woods!!

Heres the stats of todays journey to the range. Federals patterned the best, 1st try at 20 yds had 55 plus pellets in the head and neck. 2nd try with federals 68 pellets. 30 yds 32 pellets in head and neck. I am ready to let loose on these things. Did some scouting today and saw 6 deer and 6 turkeys 2 of which were very large toms. It was windy today so they were layin in the grass. I was able to get within 15 to 30 yards of them. It was a very nice day for a hike.

Ha I did Mo. Without even relizing it. OO well nobody said I was the brightest one on the tree. Wait somebody did but I dont consider them credible sources.:DHey Mo how could you show or even consider posting a matthews, and to think I thought you were different.:D;)I guess any bow will throw a stick downrange, its the shooter that makes the bow. What size shot do most of you shotgunners use. And MO do you know if Missouri allows the use of the dreaded 8 letter word crossbow for turkeys. I don't have one or anything I was just wondering.

You should hear the racket as they feed. and this is only a portion of the birds around my hunting area. I have three feeders and everyone is loaded. I am trying to access to two more farms in the area.

Hey Mo or anyone else that shoots ACC's. I shoot a reflex buckskin set at 68 pounds and shooting around 285 feet per second. What type of acc am I looking for. Bass pro has 2 kinds size 3-49 or 3-60. I have no clue what that means. Can you help?

TeeJay 03-27-2006 11:11 AM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

No offence Mo, but I think ACC arrows are not only over priced but over rated also. It is one thing if you are doing alot of compatition shooting, but to go out and shoot a bird or a deer save your money. My opinion.

Hey guys, sorry about just now checking in... my season opens this coming Saturday (April 1st). Hopefully we can be the ones that fool the big boys. I'll be hunting in East Tn.

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Saltflat, I'd have to know the length of the arrow to give you a postive answer, but once you get that, the Easton site has a chart telling you what size to use for different weight/length combinations. I used ACC's for many years, and although you won't tell much of a difference with turkeys, for deer, the smaller diameter of the ACC's will result in more pass throughs than a regular sized carbon shaft. I only ever had one deer I shot with the ACC's that wasn't a pass-through and had many shots blow through shoulders and one shot blew through the shoulder and then the brisket, and still burried in the ground 3 inches. I haven't had as many pass-throughs even with heavier alums, or carbons.

Slice

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

I have a 29 inch draw length so I was thinking of having arrows cut to 31" what do you think.

Oneshot7 03-27-2006 03:12 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

that should work salt but i would get it cut to 32 but that is me though

mobow 03-27-2006 04:59 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Hey, TeeJay's on my team, so even though he does shoot a Mathews, the teammate thing overpowers it.

Salt, your DL being 29" you could prolly cut your arrow to 28, maybe even 27. GO with a 3-49.

TeeJay, yeah, they are expensive, I agree. But, have you ever shot the? I too used to shoot the Beman ICS Hunter and the ACC blows them away, IMO, but hey, I guess if your standard are low enough to shoot a Mathews...... :D:D :D:D j/k bro!

OOO No Mo you are gonna start something now. I thought you couldn't pick on him if he was the ONLY one on the team that shoots a matthews.:D:DThere has to be at least two so it doesn't seem like were biast and just picking on one person.;)Tee jay sorry buddy but things just happen its like a chevy and a ford you cant have both. OOO and MO if you are a ford Lover don't tell me cause then I will have to quit talking to you.LOL:)

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Come on ultimag I could make a bow out of a a tree branch and shoot stick arrows out of it and still hit something that small, cough cough I mean big.;) All I am sayin is if your lookin for accuracy. dependability and anything else you could possibly want in a bow look at Hoyt.
Once I try something I like I am like a walking bill board for the company.
By the way just kiddin about the size of your elk. Nice animal I love how you gotta transport it on a trailer. I have always wanted to go elk hunting. Maybe some day.

ultimag 03-27-2006 07:51 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

he is only a 4x5 i have shot bigger you should have seen the monster with him got within 70 yds 3x but would not leave those 20 cows. That is the first elk i ever could load up whole usually i got a 2 mile pack on my back OUCH :):):)

saltflat 03-27-2006 08:12 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

I have always wondered how you guys got them out. I have heard that you have to quarter them and carry them out in parts. Thats an awful lot of work. How on earth would you skin them. I have tried skinning deer on the ground and that is a chore in its self. How far was that elk from you when you shot. Did the arrow hit where you wanted it to, I promise no more mathews jokes. Tell us the story we need a change around here.

never mind but i am guessing that i am the only martin shooter in the room now cough cough LOL

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

Oneshot buddy I think your right.lol just hang in there. I really don't think that there is much of a difference with todays bows. They all have to compete with each other so they have to produce some comparable models to stay competitive. It aint the bow its the shooter. You could give the best bow to someone and if they cant shoot it thats it they just cant shoot it. I was able to shoot 2 inch groups at 30 yards with a bow that is older than me. I bought a new one cause I wanted newer technology and because i wanted a higher letoff percentage.

solocamshooter, welcome aboard!!!! Check back, we're having a blast in here!!!!

TeeJay, you knows I love ya buddy!

Salt..........no, Missouri doesn't allow crossbows unless you have a physical disability. I own a Ford Ranger and LOVE IT!!!! When the Ole Gray Mayor finally lets go, I'll get another one!

ultimag, EXCELLENT ELK!!!! Man, just think of how much bigger it would have been had you been shooting a HOYT??!!!!! :D:D

Guys, it's like this. I act here like I act in life. I have several friends that shoot a Mathews, and I give them just as much trouble if not more. I mean, hey.....it's better than a Mossberg......;):D[&:]

We also have a new member to welcome......um.....gonna have to go look again at the name. I'll edit in a moment.

country mudder...that's it. Welcome aboard. !! Glad to have you!

Also you drive a what a ranger you must like working on your truck on the weekends rather than hunting.:DI will let you slide this time cause you are good guy and I drive arangeralso. I am hoping you aging gentlemen can't read what I just typed without glasses. If you cant read it it just says the county in which I hunt. ;)

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

i would have shot that big 6x6 (350 class) if i was toting a hoyt I give my hunting buddy crap also he shoots a Bowtec. Anyhow that bull was 30 yds, he was bugling just over the rise in a huge open park, going crazy, the whole time the big boy was going nuts also. I was cow calling but he would not come any closer i could not see him at this point so i decided to crawl to yhe next tree about 40 yds. I am about 10yds from the tree there he comes and i am in the open i think iam busted but the wind is in my favor. I put my bow over my face and act like a bush he moves closer at 30 yds he stares directly at me and bugles right in my face. Then he turns his head i draw whack beautiful shot he goes 50 yds goes down gets up goes to the nearest tree and falls over. adrenaline pumping the whole time.Where he fell was 200 yds down hill to my dads neighboring ranchers end of his road and he let me drive in and get him. I shot him on public ground.

mobow 03-28-2006 03:19 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

ultimag, that's an awesome story! I can't even imagine having one that close and bugling. Heck, I've never even hunted elk before.

TeeJay......yer just funny.......they still make Hoyt, yes.

salt, I've been driving my Ranger for 11 years, and other than brakes, plugs and things of that nature....it's never been in the shop. At almost 160,000 miles, I have had absolutely no trouble with it at all.And it's a good thing, because I could no more work on a new vehicle than I could the space shuttle. Now, give me an old Chevy 350.....that's another story.

QTompkins, glad to have you on board. And yes, this is most certainly the nut house. I can't control them anymore. If someone don't shoot a turkey gobbla soon......I don't know what's gonna happen. :D

saltflat 03-28-2006 05:24 PM

RE: Official Team ThunderStrut (10) thread.

I wonder if store bought turkey counts? Who would need to know anyway? I here ya Mo I bought my ranger for fuel economy. So far I have had to put some work into it but no to bad. And what do you mean you cant control us anymore ha you never could:Dwe're carazy people. We are so crazy the nut house probably wouldn't take us.:D

Oneshot7 03-28-2006 06:24 PM
