.54 PRB twist rate

I've seen TC's with the 1-66 barrels that weren't Douglas barrels. It was always printed on the barrel. I'm not sure if they came from the custom shop, or they were just a limited run.
Trust me. If it's not printed on the barrel. It's 1-48. I've been messing with TC sidelocks for almost 4 decades.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, its not a kit rifle. I don't know what year for sure, the previous owner told me he had it a good while. It just has the company name/address and .54 cal on it. Doesn't even say Renegade. I guess I have to assume its 1:48, maybe one day I'll check it. Either way I'll be shooting prb's so whatever it is...it is! Sure is a pretty rifle, and I have one of those TC peeps on it. Hopefully it will be a shooter.
I wonder if TC can tell me anything about it by the serial #?

Yeah BPS, mine is 16xxx. Doesn't really matter to me, its pristine, has double triggers and a nice TC peep.
Now I just gotta find some time and work up a load for it. I've never shot it yet, and in fact...I've never shot a prb ever out of any rifle. All the sidelocks I had I only shot conicals out of.
Suggestions? I plan to get some real BP to try in this gun, but I may start out with Pyrodex RS as I have plenty of that.

Yes, they were, but we're talking about a Renegade. The PA was a hex to round barrel too, and I believe the gun was made for flintlock season that had to use a PRB. Of course they wimped out and sabots can be used now.

That's not the important part. They were made for the PA season which was nothing but a PRB, so all were 1-66.
It's a shame TC didn't offer it in all the models. I think the majority of TC sidelocks are shot with a PRB. The 1-48 is ok for a PRB if the rifling is deep, but TC made shallow rifling more suited for conicals.
What they should have offered is separate barrels you could buy like the GPR. a conical barrel and a PRB barrel. They would have sold like crazy and there never would have been a need for the GM drop in barrels.

Our original flintlock (late season) remained a PRB only season for many years and that's why the PA hunter came on the market. The state eventually changed the regs to allow conical and saboted projectiles in the mid 90's (I believe). T/C did offer a 1:66 twist barrel through their custom shop for a brief period, but that eventually fell by the wayside as well.
The .56 smoothbore Renegade was T/C's attempt to market their guns in Massachusetts where only smoothbore firearms were allowed for big game. It to fell out of grace after Mass. passed regs allowing rifled shotguns and muzzleloaders.
