CAST is an ole term for " SMOKIN BABY" !!!! A.P. is right,, the ole timers had cast,
we now have F.P.S.!! Cast is how far a bow can sling a arrow, and f.p.s. is our updated version of CAST.

Again for each draw weight or bow design there's probably an arrow weight that has the best cast and it might not be the fastest arrow initially. So strictly speaking FPS and cast aren't the same thing.

California is still using cast/distance an arrow travels to determine what' s legal and what isn' t. I don' t remember exactly, but believe the minimum is 130 or 150 yards with a legal hunting arrow.

I have visions of archery hunters gathering at a golf course with the local Game Warden who accumulates flight data and issues valid "arrow flight" registration slips..

seymour, didn't mean to sound like a smart ass ! but CAST and FPS, ARE related to the same out come. PINELANDER ain't that some crap ! couldn't imagine that.. [X(]

The fact is that while arrow speed and cast are related, the relationship isn't necessarily intuitive, directly proportional or common sensical but based on mechanical physics. The reason is because, as previously noted, arrows of different weights absorb varying amounts of energy from the bow and arrows by their design have considerable drag which will slow down light, initially fast arrows quite dramatically.
I'm sorry if you don't understand this. I don't know how I can make it more clear, but again cast and FPS aren't the same thing and those who presume otherwise are in for a surprise. However, you're at liberty to believe anything you want. Far be it from me to interfere with that.
Have a nice day.

SEYMOUR,, What i meant was that cast and FPS are related to each other as is many other elements to acheive the answer to CAST !. I beleive CAST was a term with no real scientific data when the ole timers began flinging arrows just to see how far they would go.
Cast has no singal element of it's equation thats simply defines CAST !. Thats where iam coming from. cool [:-]

So are we saying that if we have 2 bows and each of them shoot a 500gr arrow at 185fps the bow with better cast will shoot an arrow farther?

K N, I believe the scenario quoted above is entirely possible, & many times be mistakenly attributed to superior 'cast' of one bow over another. If the test arrow were spined properly for bow 'A' & not for bow 'B', then a cleaner launch & less in flight gyration would certainly allow the arrow from bow 'A' to travel further than from bow 'B', even tho both bows released the arrow at the exact same speed. To the casual onlooker, bow 'A' would appear to have better cast.
