Default Fingers or release

I hace a 7 yr old son that has been shooting a Seneca wheelbow for about 18 months, using finger tabs. Now, he wishes to follow in Dad's footsteps and move to a release. Is this a good idea or should I encourage his continued use of a finger tab? Down the line, we'll be moving on to another bow. That is a whole diffeent topic, though- Santa has already visited <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>.

I think if you move him into a release you should start getting him coached so he doesnt make mistakes with the release early on and have to clean them up later when its harder, I think there are some good coaches in saskatchewan I just don't know where. I shot fingers, for most of then 10years I have been shooting and I had no problems. If you do get him a release, get something good that will grow as he grows and can be used for a long time. For now good luck, and good shooting.

I don't really know much about kids, but real releases that don't require subsequent re-learning, are what would be called hair triggers in the gun world. Accidental discharges aren't that uncomon. One option would be for you to go to fingers. Fingers are great if you can do them. I started using a releas, because the knowledge I grew up with suggested you could shoot bows under 46 inches with fingers, and that is were bows are going. Of course that is now done all the time. Also there is a lot more comp in the 3D release classes. Fingers are a great way to learn, and allow the budding archer to branch out into FITA, Traditional, or stay with the compound. Picking up a release after fingers is a breeze.
