I have only had one string let go and it must've happened while the bow was in storage 'cause I opened the case and it was broken. I shot the factory Hoyt cables on my old Defiant at 80 lbs. for about 3000 shots per year. I'd say they lasted about 10000 shots before the string let loose in the case. I'll typically get 3-4 seasons out of a set of strings and cables but that's with fanatical care of them to keep any dirt or sand out of them and keep them lubed religiously. I just replaced the set on my 72 lb. UltraTech after 5 seasons and they showed no wear, but I'd be surprised if I shoot 1000 arrows a season these days. (I just wanted to get into string building and figured it was about time to replace them.)

My personal preference is to put new Winner's Choice strings and cables on every other year!!

Gibblet,I do the same.I make strings also, and change before every season.I agree too that the poundage of bow has something to do with the frequency of my change,as well as the draw length. Before I started making strings I had a factory string on my older hoyt havoc break at full draw,it was one of the scarriest things I ever remeber. When I make my strings now,I use 452 and make sure before I do my end servings, I use square knots to cinch down my two color strings.Ever try to untie a square knot that has been sinched down?

Gibblet, I know you definitely know your strings, just from reading other peoples posts! You mentioned string care...I had the same string and cables on my Ultratec for four years! I shoot about 100 arrows a week, year round, and wax my cables and string once a week (with Tex-Tite), making sure to work the wax in real good with my thumb and forefinger. I check the cams for burrs and the string and cables for any wear. I had a new set in my tackle box since I owned the bow and when I took it to the shop for a "tune-up", the pro told me thatgiven the condition that the original set was in, he wouldn't bother changing them. When I sold the bow (with the same set on it), the guy who bought it thought I was pulling his leg when I told him how old the string and cables were (and he still has the new set in his tackle box.
Gibblet,
After reading the posts in this thread, and talking to other bowhunters/archers, I think I'll make it a habit to change my strings/cables at least every other year! I've heard several "horror stories" from people who have had strings break on them. Thanks to all for the education!

gotta have knots. when someone talks about a string that won't quit stretching, its not really stretching, well i should say the material isn't what's stretching.
