All I use is bondo, but I leave the cartlige in. Why do you remove it? Personal preferance?

Question bout the cartlige. I sent a cape off to get it dry tanned and when I got it back the cartlige was realy realy hard.If it gets that hard I wouldn't think you wouldneet to put that much bondo in the ear. Just enough tohelp the ear keep it's shape. When the carlige dries it will add more support.

Yeah but if you don't scrape it off ,real good and some oil remains eventually the ear could drum.

When I soak a dry tan cape usually the ears remain hard so I wrap them with wet paper towells and I refrigerate over night the ears will then be soft.

Sorry Alex I think you miss understood me about the tanned ears. I don't have a problem rehydrating them (but thats a good idea to wrap them up. I was trying to say that when the cartlige dries on a tanned cape it gets prety daing hard and that I wouldn't think it would require a lot of bondo either. So you could get the ears pretty thin. I mounted the buck bellow using bondo and I left the ear cartlige in. One of the main reasonsI like to leave the cartlige in is because whenI do put the bondo in the ear the cartlige makes it easier to regain the shape of the ear and it's easier to put the creases in the ear... i just put enough bondo in to hold the shape on the ear and when the cartlige dries the whole ear is solid.

I know what you Mitchell, but if you make it too thin, then you have the problem of customers grabbing the mount bythe ears and braking the bondo, I know I had to fix quite a few that way, leaving the cartlidge is OK it is that we all get use to different techniques ,they both work well
