Why do they make it so hard to adopt an animal when they know there are many thousands of pets that are not wanted.

I got denied by a Recue Center for Labradors on the application.

Now because of it I will buy a new pup AKC certified which I'm probably better off this way.

I think with the number of unwanted animals in the world there should be some type of law stating that people wanting to adopt should not be denied the opportunity.

Oh well to each organization it's own.

Why were you denied? I got my last 2 dogs from a rescue center. They try to find a place for the animals they have where they are sure that the animal gets whatever THEY feel it needs. This means that sometimes the centers have opinionated requirements and people are turned down for a particular animal because of these requirements. It dosen't seem right to everyone but they develope some kind of standard and they stick to it. You are probably right when you say you are probably better off buying from a breeder anyway as this way you can get a dog from known lines. This way you can make a more informed decision when you are picking your pup. Don't sell the rescues short though they are doing what they feel is best for each individual animal that they place. Incidently the 2 dogs that I adopted turned out to be two of the best all around companions I could ever have hoped to have. Both would never win any field trials but they learned to trail, flush and retrieve birds for me. They also have been my constant companions on numerous backpacking trips, day hikes, and darn near any other activity where I could include them. I can honestly tell you that I do not regret getting these dogs from the rescue and when my current buddy leaves me I will probably go to the rescue again. I'm really sorry to hear that you were denied a rescue animal but if you haven't already bought from a breeder maybe you could give another rescue organization a chance to fix you up.

To tell you the truth I believe they denied me do to the past dogs that I have had. I truthfully told them about what happened to my other dogs via ran over by cars or stolen from me or dieing from old age.

They said that the environment wasn't safe for me to adopt a dog. But what they failed to review was that these previous animals were at other locations and were born to be outside dogs on many acres of land. They I assume thought I lived at the same place but I explained that I did not, and any dog that I was going to get would be an indoor/outdoor pet.

I don't know I guess they thought I was a bad person or something.

If you paid any attention to the application it was stated that my
previous animals were at a different location's with no fencing, and
without conversation you would have no understanding as to what
happened. I could have left that information blank but what I was
really doing is being honest which you obviously didn't take in
consideration. I don't have any certain vet, which if is a requirement
to adopt a pet is pretty sad as there are many vets in Houston and any
of which could treat an animal the vet that has treated many of my
previous animals is Kenneth Funk sounds strange but it his name. You cannot deny an animal from being stolen if a thief wants something
they will get it. I have had an animal stolen from me while at a
beach. Just like a parent having a child stolen it happened in a split
second.

As for the references if you require them I am sorry that I did not
provide them. If the application could be reconsidered then I will
provide them. I'm only trying to allow an animal not just a good life
but a great life. One that any dog would want, I thought that if I
adopted one instead of buying a pup that it would be one dog's life
saved. Although STLRR may not put animals down I do know the SPCA does
and it's a shame so many have to die and many more will if foundations
such as yours deny claims like mine.

My intentions to get a Labrador are much stronger than many of your
clients. The animal I get will be treated with much more care and love
than many of your other clients that have been approved.

It's sad that you base your decision off a piece of paper rather than
getting to know someone. At least when I adopted our cat we got to
personally socialize and explain certain situations.

As for Parker the one Lab that I wanted on your site it was as if I
already knew the dog. I wanted him very badly and now the dream with
him were shot to well you know. I was already planning what bed I was
going to buy for him what water bowl I wanted and how I was going to
tap into the plumbing to provide for fresh water, and what
modifications I was going to make to our doors so he would have the
freedom to move in or out of the house (to the back yard of course). I
was already planning to put time in my schedule early mornings for
jogs and afternoons for playing and training. Please if and only if
your are a liberal person to understand that the dog that I get will
not be used for hunting because my intentions are far from training
him to be a hunting dog. I want to train him to only find antler
sheds.

Jeez I just want Parker! Nothing I wrote should have been
automatically denied of him.

That's to bad is there a reason? It's pretty sorry that you choose to
not allow me to adopt a dog, see I'm not a poor person by any means
and
would much rather give a dog the chance of a good life rather than
the animals previous owner or sheltered life that it has lived.

Guess I'm off to buy an AKC White Lab of my choice rather than
giving another great dog a second chance.

It's a shame you deny a dog the chance of a good life, because your
not
denying me anything!

And I hope you didn't make your decision based on previous animals
that
I have owned because in all reality you do not know any of the
situations without a lengthy conversation.

As both a breeder and foster home for Brittanies, I have mixed feelings about this post. On the one hand, I feel that everyone who has room in their heart and home for a rescue dog should be given the chance to help. On the other hand, a lot of these dogs are coming from neglectful or abusive homes and need special care that not everyone can provide. I would happily deny ownership of both my fosters and bred dogs to anyone who ever so casually lists himself as having lost 5+ dogs to vehicle accidents. I grew up on a ranch with cow dogs and gsp's, and we never saw that rate of mortality!

blackliner, See I understand where both of you are coming from but as stated that was at a previous address not the one I am at now. I won't explain what happened in each case here as it would make for a long story. But nobody wants to have a pet killed by vehicles or other such incidents as being stolen. We loved our dog's even though they were outside only dogs. I'm pretty sure it was a chain of events that the center denied my claim but that's fine and dandy with me. I don't think a breeder would deny my money!

You have to put yourself in their position. They are focused on the good of the dog. Let's say 2 applications come in, yours and anone else's. Let's assume they haven't run through so many dogs. The other application gets the dog--everytime. Not a tough choice.

Try someplace close to home, visit the shelter, call the folks and talk to them, like you said, they can't know everything from an application (particularly if it isn't properly completed and checked/proofed for errors). No offense intended, but a poorly completed application makes a bad impression.
