Default Mid sized tracking dog / pet

I am looking to get a mid sized tracking dog, that will also be a good pet around other animals. I want a dog that can stay outside with my boxer & room mates chocolate lab while I'm at work...

Mainly I want a dog that can be a great pet around the house that I can also bring to the hunting camp, put on a blood trail at my land or on a friends a few hours, maybe the next day? and be able to find the deer. I want a dog that I will keep on a leash while tracking. I have been looking at the texas blue lacy (I live & hunt in Louisiana).

I already ordered John Jeanneney's book on tracking deer- but am just looking for advice while I sit around and wait for it to show up.

You may want to look at the Samll Munsterlander - this breed is well known for tracking.

Blood tracking is a requirement for the German testing system.
either a Kuzhaar or Drahthaar may be also what you are looking for.

or there is a wire haired daschound - and this small breed is well known for blood tracking.

Now I have never trained blood tracking but in the dog world I know some who do.

None better than a beagle, some may be faster, but none any better.

I too, think a beagle would be a good choice. My first beagle, Toot, lived with me for almost 17 years and found many deer and hogs for me and friends. Like to have kill me when I had to have her put down. I got another beagle 4 years ago, Hunter, he has already found deer for friends. He sleeps at my feet as I type this, along with my Lab, Bud, and a another dog I picked up as a pup at a dump, Tramp.Hunter gets along good with them and they stay outside when I'm not home.

One thing I will say about a beagle, they are independant and need to be on a shoulder harness when tracking.

I might lean toward the catahoula cur. They have a good nose for stuff like that and in case it runs into trouble while trailing they have enough grit to take care of themselves
