RE: Mid sized tracking dog / pet
I too, think a beagle would be a good choice. My first beagle, Toot, lived with me for almost 17 years and found many deer and hogs for me and friends. Like to have kill me when I had to have her put down. I got another beagle 4 years ago, Hunter, he has already found deer for friends. He sleeps at my feet as I type this, along with my Lab, Bud, and a another dog I picked up as a pup at a dump, Tramp.Hunter gets along good with them and they stay outside when I'm not home.
One thing I will say about a beagle, they are independant and need to be on a shoulder harness when tracking.
