Take a look at a Deutsch Drahthaar. http://www.vdd-gna.org/
I've got a GSP and plan on hunting ducks but I am in the south.

my 10month old Chocolate lab so far has been the best pointing dog i have been around, excellent natural ability in bird hunting. I really love GSPs but for cold water I worry about one. While I was loading up afterhunting grouse by the streammy Allie just busted the water wide open and this is with air temp around 27-30 degrees F. She was dry in no time, close to dry by the next place i unloaded and she absolutely loved it. As much as I love bird dogs the lab is just a beast and capable of any job for sporting dogs(even saw them coon hunt before)

shorthairs do fine if they are in and out of the water and moving i.e. hunting grouse, pheasants etc regardless of temperature. Duck hunting however is a different story altogether. Mine works great here in NC but even here with a vest and a boat heater, late season hunts can be hard on him. Where you are, it would be really really tough.
