Default Injured dog, please reply ASAP.

Ok, today I went out and fetched with my dog for awhile. I tossed his dummy into a pile of bursh... He dove in, yipped, grabbed the dummy and brought it back... Nothing showed any signs of him hurting himself or anything. But just a while ago, he started limping. And now, he cant put presure on that foot. Whats up? He wont let me look at it. I dont want to make a trip to the vet right now so... I need help!

Hard to say really. If there was no tell tale sign of a cut or bleeding. He may have landed on it the wrong when when he leaped into the brush.Could be a slight sprain or even twisted it the wrong way.Either can be painful enough for the dog to not want to put any pressure on the leg.I'd also look for swelling.A twist or sprain can last for a few days so keep a eye on it..if you see absoultely NO improvement in 3-5 days or you think its gotten worse, then by all means it time to see the Vet.Good Luck Take care Jackson..

The first thing you need to do is hold the dog down and look at it. If there was a snake in the pile he may have been bitten. But for either a twist or bite do the following.

I have a lab and 35 hounds and sometimes mine get injured. Give the dog an injection of 3cc of Penecillan, you can get it from a vet supply place. Also give him a 2cc injection of Dexametazone. This will take the swelling and pain out. But if you don't know a Vet. that can call it in for you, you will have to go to the Vet and get a prescription.

I hate to tell you this, Stonecold, but a single injection of Penicillin will not do squat. This is a very common misconception. An antibiotic is only good if used over a period of time. In the case of penicillin....a shot every 6-12 hours for 7 to 10 days.

Washington Hunter,
Sounds like he had a very minor injury. Glad to hear it turned out ok. It is best, however, to keep an eye on it for the next few days.

WASHINGTON HUNTER,
I had they same problem a couple of times with my lab Java. when I first moved to Ft Lewis I had her out running. she ran thru some brush & came out limping with a slight yelp. I thought a thorn ect actually she Tore/strained her ACL. The TX was to cost $800+ One vet said that it would only extend her hunting 1-2 years & she would still have problems. Our vet (we could get to him right away) said 1 COATED asprin 3x day with peanut butter cheese & rest. Every other year she'll have a limp if she goes out for a hard run after inactivity. I hope this helps

There is NO such thing as a bad day HUNTING
Good Luck & Good Hunting
Dan
