Today I saw a deer that was black from the base of the tail all the way down to the hooves. The rest of it looked like a typical white tail. It looked like the deer sat in black paint.
The whole back end was jet black. And it ran kinda funny. Not like a regular deer. Does anyone know of anything like that or what kind of cross breed it would be?

Hutch,
That is called a Melanistic Deer. Melanistic means the deer has an increased amount of black or nearly black pigmentation. It is a genetic trait, just like a person with brown hair or dark skin. Geneticly the deer is no less or greater, but most biologist, ranch managers, and/ or consultants would rather have that animal out of their herd.
If you have any more questions or comments, feel free to contact me.
