Hello Folks,
Can someone answer the following qusetions please.
I plan to hunt Stewart next year. I read the imformation and I'm pumped.

1. Can I camp there or will I need to get a motel.

2. I was stationed there in 76-78 and in order to get through the gate I had to have a sticker on my car and an ID card. What does a hunter need to get through the gate?

3. How far is the check in gate off of 144?

4. I'm going from central Florida would it be better for me to come up i 95 and then get on 144 or go to Hinesville and through th eFort Stewart gate.

**I mostly plan to bow / muzzleload hunt and noticed those areas are next to the check in.
5.I noticed the check in don't open till late. DO you just call in to make an appointment and then drive straight to your spot or will someone be at the checkin at 5:00 Am?

Thanks guys,
Chuck7

Hey chuck.I'll answer your questions in order.

1-No camping

2-There are 4 gates to enter Ft.Stewart, and then several accessgates to go on base. The 4 gates are located ....2 on hwy 144,onecoming fromof Glennville, one coming from Richmond Hill. One on Hwy 119 coming from Pembroke, and one coming from Flemington(Hinesville direction). You only need a drivers liscense to get in through these 4 gates. If they ask you anything tell them you are going to pass and permit to get a huntingliscence. If you were to enter the base you will have to talk to the gaurds at the base.I have only went on base one time to hunt a section, and all I did was show them my Hunting pass, and filled out a temporary 24 hour access pass.10 minutes later you're good to go.

3-The Check in Station is about 15 miles from Richmond Hill on the right.I don't think you'll have ahard time finding it.If you start to see all the newly built houses on the left you have went too far, turn around go back toward Richmond Hill...

4-I would go up I-95 until I got to Richmond hill, and get off at 144 and come in from that way.Depending on what area you hunt...would be as to where I would rent a motel.Hinesville should be cheaper than the Interstate back at Richmond hill, but I'm not sure. Also Hinesville is closer to the areas you specified that you wanted to hunt,so I would stay in Hinesville.

5-Whooowee.I'm glad we have technology. You can now check in/out of areas by cell phone. They will explain to you how to do it.If you listen to the voice promts it is self explanitory though. The more you use it the easier it gets.No need to go to the check in station unless you harvest a deer/hog on Saturday or Sunday,or can't log out through the automated phone system. If that happens you sign out a sheet at the check station, and put it in the drop box. Also when you go in to get your pass make sure you have your hunter safety card. They were selling all State liscenses there.Hunting/Fishing/Primitive weapons..etc.

Also, there is a sign in sheet you will need to sign when you walk in.It is on the desk straight in front of you where the employee sits.Oh yeah, and don't forget to sign out or you won't be able to hunt for a week.I just got off of my 1 week suspension, and it's greuling.[8D]

2 more tips.
1-DO NOT hunt less than 100 meters(109yds)from a road.50 yds is state law,but as my friend found out it is not the same on federal land.$100 ticket.

2-DO NOT forget to put your large hunting vehicle access pass on your dash for the game warden to see who you are.$50 ticket.I leave mine on the dash 24-7.

It's really not that bad once you get used to doing it.Most of the rules are for our safety. There is a quota sytsem based on acreage of the area you are hunting.1 person per 100 acres.I like that.Good luck.If you need any more help feel free to PM me.

Thanks a million!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate your help.
5-Whooowee.I'm glad we have technology. You can now check in/out of areas by cell phone. So I don't have to check in at the gate except to get my original pass permit right?

They will explain to you how to do it.If you listen to the voice promts it is self explanitory though. The more you use it the easier it gets.No need to go to the check in station unless you harvest a deer/hog on Saturday or Sunday,or can't log out through the automated phone system. So if I score on a Sat. or Sun. I have to check my game in. If I score Mon0Fri. I call it in?If that happens you sign out a sheet at the check station, and put it in the drop box.And if my phone has troubles fill out a form outside of teh check in station??

Also when you go in to get your pass make sure you have your hunter safety card.Hey I was born in 1954 I have no Safety course card. I should be ok right 51 years old. They were selling all State liscenses there.Hunting/Fishing/Primitive weapons..etc.

Thanks again for your help. I do appreciate it greatly.

First off I was mistaken..there is holbrook campgound located in a-16(a muzzleloader, bow, slug gun area).Hoovey pointed that out in his post.I had forgotten all about it.

1-When you go hunting all you do is call the automated system..follow the promts, and sign in an area.If you stayed at a hotel..then you just drive through one of those main gates on the major roads I was talking about..show them your liscense, and go to your area. You don't go to the check station like they did in the old days..

2-If you kill a deer/hog on Sat/SUn you have to sign it on your harvest card, and if it is a deer your state liscense then take it to the check station. If you shoot a deer/hog on Mon-Fri just sign it on your Ft.Stewart harvest card,If it is a deer also sign it on your state liscense, and go clean it..but if your traveling I guess you will need to clean it up at the check station anyways. You might want to bring a bucket to put guts in,but there is running water, and a place to hang the deer/hog and clean them. You don't call kills in just sign them on your harvest card,or if it is a deer state liscense.

3-Yes if your phone has trouble go to the check station, and sign the sign out sheet, and put it in the drop box. They will explain all the procedure to you.I may be going into to much depth.[8D]

4-As far as your hunters safety card..At your age in Ga,you don't need to have one to buy your state liscense, but I would double check with pass and permit before I come, and buy the hunting pass. They can be rather strict, and won't bend any rules.Did you see their site...You can call them and they can help answer anything.

Hunter Safety Certificate...

The Army desires to offer the safest possible outdoor experience for those sportsmen and women that hunt on installation lands. Consequently, a recent Army regulation requires that ALL hunters, regardless of age and experience, complete an NRA certified hunter safety course before hunting on any installation. Fort Stewart will recognize valid hunter safety certificates issued by any state. This policy was effective 1 May 1999
Found this Chuck.looks like you need to go back to school.
