Default Couple first time hunting small game, have some questions.

Hello all,

Mostly have question regarding General/Kansas hunting Regulations.

Finally saved enough to start looking into buying some property off city limits, roughly 5+ anchorage, 45 minutes from work.

Fiance and I are interested doing some small game hunting like rabbit and squirrels on our property once we own it. We talked a lot and decided we would use either traditional bows or buy some pellet rifles for our first times out. If we enjoy it a lot then we can move on from there.

After reading the Kansas Hunting regulations. Its my understanding that I do not need Hunter Education Permit to hunt on our own land or hunt with a bow.

But when I go to KDWPT to buy a resident Hunting Permit Online I run into a problem with the Hunter Education number. Obliviously I do not have one and there is no option to select - hunting on own land. Or hunting with Bow and arrow.

So if someone can clear this up for me I'd be very grateful.

Squirrels, rabbits and coyotes do not require a permit to hunt, there are just limits that you have to abide by and for some, certain times of the year that you can't hunt them. You will, however, have to look into furbearer/harvesting permits if you decide to sell the fur (say of coyotes, for instance). Check this link out for guidelines

Have you looked into public hunting land? That's probably a good option for you and your girl for now,to figure out if you like to hunt. There are surprisingly many areas in Kansas with public hunting, the most obvious of which are Hillsdale, Clinton and Perry lakes.
You may want to keep in mind, should you guys end up liking to hunt, land owner whitetail deer tags require a minimum of 80 acres of land owned in order to qualify.

Good luck, be safe and have fun!!!

Something else to think about, you can pick up a decent, used .22 rifle for the same amount you would pay for a pellet gun that will have enough power to kill a rabbit or squirrel. Go to a local gunshop or range to look at some used rifles. Or, you could check out midwestguntrader.com

You are reading the regulations incorrectly. To hunt basically anything at all in Kansas, you must take hunter's safety course and buy a hunting license, even on your own land. Small game will not require specific game permits, i.e. tags, but you do need a hunting license, and the prerequisite safety education card.

I really wanted to help this guy out because I'm a new-ish hunter myself. And I hate to post incorrect information. So, believe it or not, I picked up the phone and called the Kansas Dept of Wildlife yesterday to ask. The information I posted was straight from the mouth of a KDWPT employee. She assured me that neither hunter's safety nor a hunting license is required when hunting on your own land, but that if you hunt anywhere else, they are.
Original poster - due to the risk of incorrect information, I would recommend you call the KDWPT yourself with your questions. They're always happy to help. And, while some of us may think we know, calling them will never yield bad information.

Happy hunting!

Go take the hunter safety course.
It is not hard, and doesn't take long.
I took both of my sons, and completed the course myself.
There is a lot you can learn from the course.

Be careful how much you trust a human institution.

Specifically in this case, KDWPT usually defines 'hunt-own-land' exemptions as land owned, rented, or managed by the hunter, spouse, or immediate family, and defines limitations for that minimum as 80acres to qualify for the exemption. The 5 acre plan here doesn't fit.

Ultimately, no reason not to get your hunters safety permit and hunting license (cheaper than a bow or air rifle).
