Heck yea Here in ole Kaintuck our bushytail season traditiionally begins the 3rd Saturday in August and they are cuttin hickorys pretty well by then. Activity begans to wane after 8:30am or so but that still gives you 2&1/2 hrs of good huntin.

Like Plinker said, go early. I like to be in the woods about a half hour before light so everything has time to settle before the sun comes up and the greys come out. Fox squirrels are late sleepers though and you can catch them as late as nine or ten o' clock.

I was always told to wait until after the first frost to hunt squirrels because they have some sort of bug under their skin that usually goes away with the first cold frost. Anyone else know what I' m refering to? It feels like a knot under their coat. If there is nothing to it than I might go out for some squirrel when it opens.

Yes Smitty_nc1 the knot you are referring to is called a werbel,I think thats how you spell it,I was once told if you have a squirrel with one throw it away but then a few years later I was told they are alright because it is in the skin and not in the meat.I bet I shot 50 before I saw my first one.If you wait for awhile after you shoot one they will crawl out of the skin. They kinda look like a small, fat black grubb worm.I have seen squirrels with them even after a couple of frosts.I am going in the morning with a buddy.
Good Luck to everyone this season.
