Default Lets see them...

Since every other post on here is about a caliber or gun to use for coyotes and foxes lets see what kind of rigs everyone is using.
Putas much info as you want on there and the more the better. Put the caliber, model, scope, bullet, sling, bipod, any custom work, anything you can think of...put it one here. Can't wait to see your guns!

Here's mine...

A Savage 110FP in a .223. I have a 6-24X44 BSA platinum target scope on it. I'm not married to a particular brand of ammuniton yet but I do shoot 50 grain FMJ bullets out of it. I have a Harris pivoting bipod on it and a Claw sling. A lot of guys give me crap about how heavy it is but here in IN a long walk to a calling spot is 1/2 mile so the weight doesn't bother me much.

This is my main go-to coyote calling gun. Savage short action, 243, special run gun, medium/heavy stainless fluted barrel, Harris Bipod for non-snow conditions, 60gr Sierra HPs at 3600fps.

My secondary calling gun: Rock River NM lower, Rock River standard 20" upper with Hogue furniture, 55gr V-Maxs.

This was last weekend on the farm....five coyotes in a day and a half. Thats pretty good for me.

TC G2 Contender carbine
Factory .204 full bull CM barrel
Mueller 3.5 x 10 Eradicator
32 gr. Hornady Vmax
max dose of RL-10x
3 feet of flesh vet tape
some no name sling

Something about a 37 inch rifle that weighs less than 7 lbs. thats balanced and has a 400 yd. reach.

You need to get out more. 1/2 mile won't get you over the first hill here in Southern Indiana.

I carried a Savage Model 12 lowprofile for a couple years.... weighed 16.25 pounds loaded. I called coyotes in over 50 of Indiana's 92with that gun. Killed around 250 animals with it. Great choice for a calling rifle in my opinion- as long as you call enough critters to justify carrying it.

Sold it last year- sticking to a pair of twin AR's now chambered in 25WSSM.

Again, your ill-informed if you think 1 or 2 coyotes have taught you something about bullet selection. Hollow points are the most lethal and fur-friendly round you can shoot out of that weapon.

The wound you've shown in the picture is a result of poor shot placement and/or close range. Soft points lack the power and expansion that hollow points offer- and therefor lack kill power. They have a tendancy to pierce but not roll a coyote. Ballistic tips will often shoot more accurately than hollowpoints but aren't as fur friendly. They also performinconsistantly whenpassing thrutissue... some splash, some pass thru and some anchor perfectly. It's a guessing game with Ballistic Tips, soft points result in too many blood trails. Hollow points are the perfect choice for coyotes in that weapon.

wow....you just spent alot of time and effort telling someone how wrong they are. come up to central indiana wherethere are no hills and each county block is a square mile. so a half mile walkwould put you right in the middle of it.

Again, your ill-informed if you think 1 or 2 coyotes have taught you something about bullet selection
man i would love to be your kid if this is the way you go about helping a beginner out. Did say I knew much about bullets just that the hollow point did some damage.

sorry if your so offended that you needed to typea couple paragraphs telling me how most of my post was ill advised and that i needed to get out more. I just thought it would be cool to see what people are shooting so others could take a look. and if they are like me would like to see what the more experienced guys are shooting so they can become a little less ill-informed.

rammer sweet guns! and skb way to go on the 'yotes!

Don't take it to heart....his post is only about half accurate anyway. Ask any question you'd like and no doubt you'll occasionally get someone who believes they have done it all and know it all. I can assure they have not.

You may want to ask him how the soft point bullets lack the power.....power is based on speed and weight. A 50 gr. Vmax at 4000 fps has the exact same power as a 50 gr. sp at 4000 fps. We use Vmaxs and Ballistic tips exclusively and as long as the shooter can shoot we don't have any problem. We get some very long shots on the prairie that really test bullets and shooters.

Also not everyone lives in IN and I can also assure you there are places in the US where a 1/2 mile is an all day event.

I would caution you against using FMJ bullets. They tend to ricochet badly.

Until this winter I used Ultramax 55gr SPs out of my AR15s on coyotes. Every one of 'em was a bang, flop, with no fur damage. Just throwing that out there. The only reason I am not using them this winter is because I have 2 Rock River AR15s that will not cycle the Ultramax ammo reliably, so I started loading up 1000 55gr Vmaxs that I had laying around that I used to load for one of my bolt 223s.

The only time I ever had to blood trail a coyote was when I had a 40gr Ballistic Tip splash on a coyotes shoulder blade, after 1.5 miles of trekking thru snow I finally caught up to him in some cattails and dispatched him. After that incident I no longer use bullets under 50grs for coyotes, and I avoid the shoulder blades like the plague (shoulder hitsare the #1 cause of wrecking pelts anyway).
