Until this winter I used Ultramax 55gr SPs out of my AR15s on coyotes. Every one of 'em was a bang, flop, with no fur damage. Just throwing that out there. The only reason I am not using them this winter is because I have 2 Rock River AR15s that will not cycle the Ultramax ammo reliably, so I started loading up 1000 55gr Vmaxs that I had laying around that I used to load for one of my bolt 223s.
The only time I ever had to blood trail a coyote was when I had a 40gr Ballistic Tip splash on a coyotes shoulder blade, after 1.5 miles of trekking thru snow I finally caught up to him in some cattails and dispatched him. After that incident I no longer use bullets under 50grs for coyotes, and I avoid the shoulder blades like the plague (shoulder hitsare the #1 cause of wrecking pelts anyway).
