Default cyote/deer gun

Hey i'm looking for a new varmint gun. I was thinking of a .243 so i can use it for cyote and for deer. Buut, my question is, will the .243 be overkill on a cyote and be enough for deer? Thanks to those who respond.

.243 is a great all around round for deer down to ground squirrels, and a great coyote round. Just use the appropriate bullet for the task at hand. For deer I use 100 grain corelocks or 95 grain partitions. For varmints I like the 70 grain nosler ballistic tip. For yotes, it depends if you want to keep you hides, or blow big holes. For hide hunting use a solid bullet that will make a little hole in and out, for absolute destruction the 70 grain tnt hollow point will turn them inside out.

THe 243 is a great choice for varmint/deer. Just pick the right bullet for the task and you'll be fine. You may also consider the 25-06 and do the same with bullet coice.

.243 is a very underrated round - Are you looking to keep the hides of the coyotes or are you just looking to take a few out of the population? If it is just to depopulate the little B@stards i'd use the same 100 grain rounds you use for deer on the coyotes.

Im looking to give they cyote a quick death and don't care about the pelt that much, but i dont want to blow the thing up, lol. Sounds like the .243 would be a good choice, is the 25-06 more powerful than the .243? Would this be a good combo deer/cyote gun?

If you dont care about the pelts i would def go with the 25-06. But i cant complain about my .243 on yotes/deer.

I have a 243 that has proven to be deadly on both, but I did just get the 25-06 and am hoping this will take the place of the 243 (the wife has claimed the 243). I really like the 25-06 round and the numbers are real similar on both rounds. I just have always wanted a 25-06 and took the plunge...Still breaking it in but it is proving to be a shooter....Good Luck on your decision

The 25-06 is a bit more powerful than the 243. I love the 25-06 personally. I have a friend that has his set-up to take deer on a powerline at 400-500 yards and he does it every year.
