Default i can't decide

In Michigan you can only use rimfires to predator/varmint hunt at night. I've gone back and read all the reviews that have been post on here about the 17 hmr and i can't decide between the 17 hmr and the 22 mag. most shots would be 100 yds or less but i would use it for woodchucks, coons, fox, coyotes(if i see one) opposum(sp?) and maybe squirrels. what do ya'll think i should go with

I'd go with the biggest allowed for coyotes, which would be the .22 magnum. For everything else, a regular .22 would work.

The .17 is much more accurate, and it moves much faster! It is also incredibly accurate 200 yds+. Although the .22 WMR has more energy than the .17. The .22 would penetrate better than the .17 also. But you mentioned the other game that you would hunt with the gun.. so I would have to say .17hmr.

.22 WMR, more energy on target, less wind drift, and more than accurate enough for your targets of opportunity.

.17 HMR. I have used it more than a dozen times for head shots under 120 yards, and I have not had to chase down the yote for a follow up shot. Just my opinion and my experience.

Have you thought anything about the 17 Mach 2 it is a rimfire with a little more punch unless I am mistaken. I have a 17hmr and love it though I think for the occassional coyote you would be well off.

There are the same laws here in NH. I use a .204 in the day (suprise) and a marlin .17 hmr at night. shot placement is key with the .17 but it will do it...

I was thinking the same thing. Limiting gun and caliber selection doesn't do anything besides punish the people that obey the law to begin with.

I would go with a 77/22 in 22mag. Then you can get a green mountain sporter barrel in 17hmr and have the best of both worlds. This is the next thing i will be doing when i purchase a new rimfire.
