First time in 25 years locally we have yotes and some nervous farmers with free range chickens. Past experience I had a .222 Remington that I usually loaded with hornady SX, but it really blew up on impact. Never saw a coyote back then, either. Anyway, I wore that barrel out so I am going to a .223. Range in my terrain is usually under 200 yards.
I'm not real concerned about pelt damage even though we have a couple buyers. Basically, I want to drop those suckers. I haven't kept up with technology... what are the good coyote bullets out there?
Thanks

Its fun to see the bulet splat an animal. But if you want sure kills go with a 60 gr bulet or 62 gr. You will not have any bullets expand from grass or sticks. It you go to light you have a hard time killing yotes is grass. I have seen the 40 gr v max and the 50 gr HP hit grass bfor the yote and they ran till I shot them with the 62 gr softpoints. When we skined the yote there 40 gr hade very little peaces of meatal in the ribs at all.
If the yotes are in wide open with no high grass or trees. Any thing out of a 223 will tost a yote.

I have had good accuracy with the 40gr Barnes VLC and the 40gr Hornady V-max. The 40gr Nosler BST shot really well out of my rifle as well. All can be loaded up to around 3800-3900 fps and will do the job. I know that the Crows out to 165-180 yards don't care for them.

So will any of these bullets leave an exit wound on a broadside shot? I'm a bug about humane kills. This rifle has a 1 in 12" twist. I assume it will handle 55 grains just fine, and I will check out the 60's.
Now if I only had a decent coyote recipe.

ballistic tips is the way to go. I did shoot 2 coyote today with JHPs, both head shots, nothing left. I shot one with a soft point once and it never moved after getting hit. Its not so much bullet choice as it is bullet placement.

Ok! Sounds like cratering is not going to be a problem. I shop alot at the local Scheel's store and I just happened to find a devoted coyote hunter on the staff who uses the .223. Hey, ammo is cheap compared to the 45 70!
