Default Scopes on Ruger #1's

Something Iv'e noticed with the number one's is with the scope rings in one position only and not adjusable at all front to rear, all scope fore and aft movement depends on the length of the back part of the scope between the adjustment knobs and the start of the rear bell. I bought a new Burris for the 45-70 and had it adjusted as far back as I could get it and still had to move my head forward to get the complete sight picture. Then adding a decent recoil pad eliminated the use of the scope at all. Ok, I'll use the irons----now though, I have the .204 #1 and it will be scoped. Problem will be finding a good scope with enough length to get the proper eye relief---any suggestions?

I had that same issue when scoping a 1B. You need a long tube for sure. Perhaps a straight tubed (like an Nikon, Sightron or Leupy African model) scope or some fixed power scopes are longer. Another option is to put an extension (offset) type ring on it and you will gain about 1/2 inch or so. That way, your scope may work. I have a Bushy Elite 4200 4-16 X 40 I just took off a Remmy in .204 Ruger. It's a dandy and long tubed. It's listed in the classifieds if you might be interested. Good luck.

Bugs----I saw your thread today and want to say thanks for the offer of the Bushnell 4200. I had just purchased a Trophy for the #1 yesterday, but I may end up with another that's going to need some glass so we need to talk. Didn't see your ad for it in the classified section, so let me know how to contact you---John

Burris and Leupold make offset rings for the Ruger action.

Thanks, both of you, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be ok on the .204, just enough length to the rear of the scope [ new Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 ] should be perfect. However, I think I'll check into the offsets for the 45-70 because I just can't get close enough to the scope with the recoil pad. Bugs, Iv'e bought another .300 WSM to replace the Remington 700, [ a friend was going to die if I didn't sell him the 700 ], so contact me on the 4200. Would you see it as a good choice for a .300 short mag?
Would recoil be a problem?---------John
