Hodgdon youth loads?
anyone have any experience loading these, Im currently loading 30-30's with 150 grain sierra flat points and 20.5 grains H4895. Just curious if anyone has done this and what kind of velocity should i expect, Im hoping to be around 1400 to 1500 fps. Im just wanting to make up a plinking load for close range plinking so i can teach my wife to shoot a rifle, she is extremely recoil sensitive.

HDW, I have loaded up some of the 'managed recoil' loads with IMR4759 and 115 gr. Sierras for my son's .270. Very light kick. Less than a .243. You might also look at one of the slip-on Limbsavers. They work well.

RE: Hodgdon youth loads?
I found a published load in "The Complete Reloading Manual for the .30-30 Winchester" in the "Speer Bullets" section 150 gr. H4895 MIN: 27.0 grs. 1674 f/s MAX: 31.0 grs. 2041 f/s.
Unless you found a published load for 20.5 grs., would add 6.5 more grains. Going below MIN. is just as dangerous as going over MAX. Good luck.

If she's extremely recoil sensitive you might want to start her off with a .22.

they have a 60% rule aslong as you use atleast 60% of a maximum charge its considered safe according to hodgdon. I did ask the tech, that 20.4 grains seemed too low but he assured me its safe.

RE: Hodgdon youth loads?
For plinking with a 30-30 here is a good load,and cheaper to shoot. Use a Speer 100gr,half jacketed bullet. (plinkers) Using 4759 powder> 20.5 gr-23.5grs,will give you between 2210-2500fps>>4198 powder from27grs to32grs=2200fpsto2675fps...2400powder 21grs to 26.5=2180fpsto2595fps...next. 4895 33.5grs to 38.5gs=2200fpsto2610fps............For a GOOD hunting load use sierra 130gr. F.N. bullets with 37grs of BL-C powder== 2610fps vel. hope i helped some. vangunsmith
