Default hog medicine

I stumbled across this web site while doing a search for 180 gr 270 Win bullets. I was considering them for hunting hogs. My next choice would be the 160 gr Nosler Partition. Any comments on boar hunting with the 270 woul be appreciated.

I've taken about 1/2 dozen hogs of varying sizing using Sierra GameKings in .270. The furthest I've even had to track after the shot was about 15yds.

The Partition will be a good bullet to use. In fact about the only bullet I'd suggest you NOT use are the ballistic tips like the Noslers, Combined Technolgy (winchester), or Hornady SSTs. Had a bad experience with them on hogs, bullet exploded on impact..........hit it in the shoulder quartering toward me - the liver blew out the ENTRY hole and only part of the core came out the exit hole. Dropped the pig, but I don't like to rely on performance like that.

Rule of hog hunting. Hit em broadsided with anything from a 22-250 to 300Weatherby, and go down, hit em head on in the breast plate, better bring ya a cannon. I hog hunt wiht a 270 and 150gr Sierras.

I regularly take hogs with a 30-30. Biggest has been just under 300lbs. Most never took another step. Longest track has been maybe 30 yards and if I remember right that was a bad shot placement. Entirely my fault. I shoot handloads of 170 gr. Speer FP powered by 30gr of H322. I have yet to recover a bullet when shooting at normal "hog range" here in the south.

However, if I were to be hunting some of the big Russian or European breeds I may go with a 270 or 30-06 with a heavy premium bullet. They can be a lot tougher than the feral hogs down here.

The 180's 'll work great on hogs if your barrel twist is fast enough to keep them travelling on their original path when they hit the piggy. If they tumble and dive off-course, their performance will leave a lot to be desired. I'd use the Nosler Partition 160's if your twist is not faster than 1/10"! They will penetrate at least as well as or better than the standard jacketed 180 (which I assume is the Barnes Original), and stay on course as well!\ after hitting game.

I've only ever shot hogs from a tree stand while deer hunting. Everytime I did a head shot.
